How do you handle planning vacations?

We are thinking of going out of the country to the Caribbean next year. But with everything we are faced with now, is that even a smart thing to do? I feel like I can't make any plans now because I am afraid he would be sick, or afraid he can't be too far away from his doctors.

How do you all handle it?

The carribean sounds wonderful. Can I come? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

CF can really cut into life's pleasures, and vacations could definitely be ruined. But that shouldn't stop you and your son from having a full life. If he has CF, he's had it his whole life. Chances are you'll be able to go and enjoy your trip. If he shows signs of getting ill, or if he winds up needing regular IVs, you might ask the CF team to consider doing a "tune up" a month before your trip so that you can be more likely to not be sidelined by illness.

Life is definitely unpredictable. Especially life with CF. But your CF team can help you prepare as best you can for travel.

We just go! Sure I worry and check online about nearest medical facilities, probably overpack, but we try to have a good time.

We went to Mexico for a wedding when DS was about 2 1/2. Had a great time. I DID have to pack some spagettios in my luggage just in case he didn't like some of the food we had. Otherwise, we packed everything medically related in our carry-ons -- little lunch bag cooler for refridgerated meds, another bag with medications, nebulizer. Vest fits in most overhead bins.

I did check with his doctor in terms of any vaccinations or medications he might need. DS needed one for Hep A, which is now apparently a standard vaccine for kids. Other suggestion was LOTS of suncreen.

Two years ago we spent a week in Florida.
