How Do You Know When To Give Extra Salt

Do the kids show signs that they need more salt? I have read that some of you add salt water in their g-tubes sometimes or in their bottles. We have never been instructed to do anything other than to allow Marissa all the salty snacks she wants, gatorade, and access to a salt shaker at meal times. Will she on her own keep her salt levels up that way? She is a "salty girl." What are the signs that we would be able to see that shows she is low on salt? Is it possible for us or her to over-salt her?

Thanks,
Terry

Hi Terry,

Andrew naturally adjusts his salt intake by gravitating toward salty foods. If I'm handing out popsicles to the neighbors he will go in the house and grab some chips or a giant pickle for himself! I push fluids in the hot North Carolina summers, but I don't usually have to worry about his salt. He adds it himself to his veggies, potatoes, etc. He loves loves loves it!

Maybe, if she likes salt and salts all her food.

One way i know if Nathan needs salt is if he is running a fever but has no other symptoms. I will add some salt for him or have him add some and if the fever goes away, I know it was just a salt issue.

I also have him add salt or do it for him if he is sweating alot, mostly in the summer but sometimes in the winter too.

We have noticed that if there is anything off with him, his attitude, moodiness, fever, sweating, if he just isn't feeling well or right, that could mean he needs salt and wenstart with that first and if that fixes it, we are good to go, if not, we know that somthing else could be up with his CF. If it wasn't the salt, his cough usually starts going up within a day or two, but we always start with the salt because sometimes it is just that simple.

I remember when he was a baby he would get these really high fevers at night but we could not figure out what was wrong with him. Finally one of the CF nurses asked if we were adding salt to his bottles and recommended a packet of salt (1/8 tsp) be added to his bottles. That fixed it and I was amazed at how simple that was to get rid of those fevers. We almost went to the ER because it was up to 103 and that is when she asked about the salt. I was so happy that was all it was but also felt a little stupid that I didn't know I was suppose to be adding salt to his formula. Thank goodness it was such an easy fix though.

We added salt to Josh's bottle once when he was first diagnosed. With our discharge papers the nurse wrote the incorrect amount of salt per bottle. We ended up feeding him two loaded bottles over 24 hours. The next day the visiting nurse was horrified because he showed signs of poisoning.

Be careful with proportions. Talk to a nutritionist or your cf nurse before adding.
