How do you make your family understand???

We have some extended family members with the skin version of MRSA. Reoccuring often. They, along with other family members, are constantly trying to downplay the chances of us getting it. Even though they have spread it amongst themselves already.

We have told them over and over again how we have chosen to limit our contact with such family members because of it in hopes to not spread it to our 8 year old son who has CF, as requested by his doctor.

Still, time and time again we are put in these positions of defending out decisions. Slowly having to limit contact with more and more family members for "their lack of precaution" for their own health.

Anyone have some magic words I can pass on so that these people finally "get it".

Thank you!

I wish i had some encouraging words for you -- but i'm still trying to get my own mother to even read about Cystic Fibrosis (which she told my husband and i the less she knew the better ) and that her boyfriend, who smokes, is NOT welcome at our home or around our son.

Good luck -- trying to make family "get it" is a hard road. They are often selfish and think we do things just to spite them when the truth of the matter is we're just trying to keep our kids as healthy as possible!

I find there are no words to "make understand' is someone chooses not to.
My mother in law has had 3 talks with me and her friend about cf and after a month or so she forgets everything and we start all over again. We just stop going to certain family meetings at certain times.
And since we have alot of kids in kindergarden age and their parents simply don't care as long as they can have a break from taking care of them, we just don't go. Iguess it's the "being selfish".
Wish I had somthing better then "just don't go to meetings".

We had to have a talk with my inlaws about this as they were planning to visit an aunt by marriage who had MRSA pneumonia. Wasn't even anyone who was close, they were traveling and wanted to check out their new house. My concern was with my FIL's chronic sinus problems, he could end up culturing it and put ds at risk.

So we asked DS infectious disease doctor about this and he said that they needed to think long and hard about how important this visit was to them and the risks involved.

My MIL wasn't happy and did they standard "DS could pick it up at the mall or school" excuse, but she understood. Just wasn't happy with the situation, how CF has changed all of our lives.

We've had to become very, very blunt -- we will not risk damaging DS lungs, which very well will decrease his life expectancy. Some people just don't get it unfortunately and if they don't care enough, then maybe I don't care to be a part of their lives.
