How much do you cough up during the day?

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering if most of you cough up lots during the day in between treatments. I use my vest morning and night for 20 min at the least everyday. I feel clear when I am done, but then a hour or so later I start coughing up stuff again, which results in me scurrying to the bathroom or to my car and hoping there is no one around to see and hear me cough up a lung to get it out. It sometimes gets to the point where i am coughing into empty cups in my car becasuse there is so much and i dont have anything to do with it (ew I know).
This is a pretty common thing for me. The only time that it does not happen is during the time when I am on IVs or that wonderful week after the IVs where you just feel great. Then I just tend to go downhill again and the stuff tends to build up I guess. I was on IVs two weeks ago and then a week of cipro but they didnt really take care of everything completely because I am already coughing all sorts of things during the day and my "grace period of a week" after finishing my meds is barly over.

I was just wonding if this is a problem for anyone else, and also how much or many times does it happen to you during the day. Also what do you do when it does happen?
I am thinking that adding a thrid afternoon vesting time would be a good idea but that is kinda tricky to plan everying around being home to vest in the middle of the day. I also thought of bringing around my acapella or flutter with me in my purse so i can use it when i think I need to. Does anyone have any strategies?

I just need some suggestions because right now the coughing is getting in the way of doing things because i know that it is just going to make me cough up a whole buch of junk. I know its good to cough things up but i feel like there could be a better way then scurrying to my car to get my tissues and cup during coughing attack=)

Thanks

In the last year I have started to also have a productive cough during the day even when I do my morning and evening treatments / Vest. So I've started doing a 10:30am and 3:30pm Acapella session in the bathroom at work. It really helps me. Good luck.

Hi Melissa,

Your story sounds identical to mine. I cough up stuff all
day. I was told it is better to get it out than to leave it in
there. I don't know what is normal. I do HS twice and my vest
twice a day. I also exercise for 40 mins during the day.
Like you said, I am good for a hour and then I start coughing
junk up again.

About a year ago I used to only cough up during treatments, and sometimes not at all, but in the last 6 months, I've developed a permanent productive cough. I find its worse when its hot and humid out (winter months I don't cough as much). I used to do physio 2x a day, but find now that I'm coughing more in between treatments, I will do physio about 3-4 times a day. I'll use my percussor 2x a day, and then the acapella once or twice in between.

I cough up about 1/4 cup of mucus with each therapy I do-2 per day. And then maybe 2 table spoons between each therapy. I get the same thing as you, about an hour or 2 after my morning therapy. But, instead of getting mucusy I just get tight. I don't know why. Its a real pain in the butt, bc I just get tight and I can't bring anything up.

I am the same way. That nasty productive and somewhat embarassing cough always hits at the most inopportune times. I too end up coughing stuff into anything I can get my hands on pretty much.

I have always had this problem. Ever since I was little I would go through my treatments and therapies and barely cough at all. I would have RTs stay for close to an hour when I was in hospital in hopes that I would cough something up. I never do. It normally takes me about 1-2 hours to feel any effect from my CPT, but when I do man do I ever get stuff up. I tend to time my treatments and things more than 2 hours before I go anywhere. If I do not do this I will be coughing and hacking while I am doing whatever activity I am partaking in. After about an hour of coughing and feeling congested I return to feeling somewhat "normal" and the coughing subsides for the most part.
