How often do you boil nebs?

I boil my nebs after every use. So they get a lot of wear and tear. I called the hosp. and asked them to call in a RX for my nebs so I can get a bunch of them so I'm not boiling them every other day.

Well, nebs are not covered by insurance. For 5 nebs (side streams) it's $75. And I do ask for nebs when I get pft's done but she'll give me like 1 or 2. Not nearly enough. (I use 7 nebs a day, so that is 49 nebs a week).

Can I go more than 1 usage between boiling? I'm afraid to breath in germs from used nebs but I hate boiling them all the time, wait for them to dry on papertowels, and I have to BUY water to boil them in because our water is gross.

Ok, let me know what you do. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat.

Thanks everyone!!

I do what you do...wash with soapy water then boil after each use. Andrew has 4 nebs daily, 6 when he is on TOBI. Because I boil morning and night I can get by with 3 neb cups a day, boiled twice. However, boiling is very hard on the cups, (not to mention the schedule!). We have always just paid out of pocket for nebulizers. This year I'm thinking of submitting then to our flex spending account. But we always max out on that, too, by about April because we can only put $5000 in each year. If I think of a solution I'll let you know, but I agree with you on the boiling issue. I don't like to rinse and dry. It takes longer for them to dry. Wehn they come straight out of the boiling water they air dry much faster.

I would check with your respiratory therapist and see if you can get them through her/him. I just tell my RT how many I need and when and she gives them to me. It think that it's billed along with our visit which ends up being much cheaper. She did say recently that the hospital had changed it's codes so she might not be able to do that forever but it has been very nice.

I've never gotten mine thru insurance -- too much of a hassle trying to deal with the DME provider locally -- I've either paid out of pocket or the RT gives me a bag of them when we go to the clinic. I also boil after each use as well. 3 for duoneb, two for tobi and one for pulmozyme.
