How often do you vest while in for a tuneup?

Johnny had a runny nose all last week. Then Thursday the runny nose stopped, and the junky cough started. CF docs stared us with antibiotics yesterday. Normally we do the vest 4 times a day with colds. But this is the worst cough he has ever had<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> thinking about him vesting every 2hrs. I'm just curious how much vesting is done while in for a tuneup. Thanks in advance.<br>Sarah<br>Mommy to Johnny 4/wcf and Bailey 2 no cf

Hi Sarah,

I am sorry your son is not feeling well. When my daughter starts up with a cough we VEST 4 times a day or every 4 hours while awake. Every 2 hours would be alot. If she wakes at night(and is sick with cough/fever) I will do manual Chest pt at night in her bed. We also add in an extra albuterol treatment before the extra vest when she is sick. When my daughter is well her VEST is 3 times a day.

I push fluids like crazy to help thin the mucus. Warm baths with epsom salts, to get the nose running. Lots of rest.

Sometimes when my daughter's cough is bad, she needs steroids with the antibiotics for the inflammation.

If you are concerned give your CF doc a call. Is he having trouble breathing? If he is wheezing or short of breath call the doc right away.

We just finished 3 weeks on iv and did the vest 4 times a day of 15 minutes wile inpatient. This was just after my daughter's diagnosis, and she was pretty sick. I think 4X a day is standard for all admissions. Maybe you could check with your clinic to see if increasing the ammount of time for each session, or speed would be helpful for your guy. Do you do 30 minutes?

Good luck, and I hope he gets to feeling better soon.

I would stick to 4x/day.

That is the norm for most in-patient stays, and I suspect you won't see much difference.

At this point I'd give the abx a couple of days to start working and keep up with 4x/day and see what happens.

When DS was in the hospital a couple years ago, they had him do vest treatments with nebs every 4 hours. We normally do 3 vest treatments a day and add another if he gets a cough or cold. Which his doctor told us to do when he was a baby after he got bronchitis. He also mentioned doing little CPT sessions while we were holding him, which we sometimes still do if he sits still long enough. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Sometimes when my son has a bad cough and can't stop at night to even fall asleep, (after doing vest 4 times a day, meds, etc), we got relief from an old times method. We would soak a hand towel in hot water (but not burning, test against your wrist to make sure) wring it out, lay it on his chest. We'd also raise the head of his bed a few inches. This sometimes helped the drainage and would allow him to sleep.

Do you use nebulized pulmozyme? We got better results when we did the pulmozyme last thing at night as it seemed to work better when done after other meds.

Good luck!! Follow up with your CF doctors and get across to them that this cough is worse than you've ever experienced. Sometimes the doctors just hear "cf cough" and assume it's the regular stuff. Be persistent and keep calling until you get some ideas or results.
