How old is too old?

I was just wondering if a child of 11 years old could still be diagnosed w/ cf or is this something that is diagnosed at a much younger age? My cousin is 11 and has had pneumonia several times in the last 2 years. She only weighs about 50 pounds and is about the size of a 6 year old. She has a terrible cough all the time and now the doctors have put her on the nebulizer machine. Please help.

You can be just about any age and get diagnosed with CF. It's not uncommon for people who are older to get diagnosed with it.

Ditto to what Ashley just said. There are some that post here regularly that weren't diagnosed until their 20's or 30's. It sure doesn't hurt anything to get her tested, then you either have an answer as to why all the digestive and lung problems or you can rule out one more thing if the test comes out negative.
I would take her to a CF center, since they have the most experience in testing for CF. Good luck!

Yes, I've also heard of people being diagnosed as adults. If she has a terrible cough and is having trouble gaining weight, she should probably be tested. The sweat test is inexpensive and easy. It's very accurate, if it's done by a center that gives the tests often and knows how (preferably a children's hospital). Carey

My b/f is 21 and just diagnosed last year. It is rare but peoplle do get diagnosed later in life. I've heard of a woman getting diagnosed in her 60's.

I would push to get her tested, regardless of what the doctors say or think. At least if it comes back negative, it will give you peace of mind in that aspect. and if it comes back positive, the sooner you start treatment the better off she will be. Best of luck and please keep all of us updated.

A CF diagnosis can come at any age. I keep hearing more and more stories of people being diagnosed later in life after years of misdiagnosis. My daughter was a fairly easy diagnosis as she had a "classic" symptom at two days of age that required surgery. Pneumonia and "failure to thrive" are two of the CF symptoms that most people recognize. I would push to have that child tested also, but push to have her tested at a qualified CF testing center.

There is someone on another CF forum (a UK one) who was diagnosed in his 50s! He is now in his sixties and only recently had his first lot of IVs.

Please have request with the doctor to have this child tested. A few other things to perhaps look for initially are foul smelling stools/oily, loose, bulky stools, clubbing of the finger tips, a salty taste to their skin. My son was not diagnosed until he was 4-5 years old, but if someone would have told me these things to look for, he probably would have been diagnosed before that time. Just food for thought.
