Hello

We live in Chicago with radiator heat and our house is very dry
right now. I'm wondering what we should do as far as
humidifiers in regards to Eli's CF?

Anyone know what the protocol on that is?

Thank you
I also live in Chicago and it is so dry right now in my apt. I use a humidifier and feel so much better with it. I clean it all the time though because I don't want any standing water. I have heard good things and bad things about CF and humidifiers but i know i feel so much better with one

We use one for my daughter. Although she doesnt have CF she does have allergies & gets nose bleeds a bit after using the heat in the house begins. It works great for her, but keeping it clean is a pain in the butt. Between the water elements & animals etc....it accumulates junk easily. As long as I keep it clean its fine & works well. I dont use one for myself, but I keep the window cracked at night. Drives my hubby nuts, but I need the cooler air to breath well. Lots of controversy over humidifiers, but I think its an individual decision & know that using it properly is key.

The problem with using humidfiers is that some types are very hard to clean. Make sure you get a newer one that you can clean all of the parts that come in contact with the water. If not...you are just breeding bacteria and then slinging it around the room to be inhaled. Also...I would shy away from vapor rubs and similar products...those types of things can cause bronchospasm.

my two cents....

My son's CF doctors somewhat reluctantly said to use a humidifier for the same reasons you have. They said humidifiers can be a breeding place for bad bugs such as pseudomonas so we opted for the boiling type and clean the whole thing with bleach every couple days and never let it sit with water in it without being turned on. I'm not plugging any particular brand, but the one we ended up with is a Slant-Fin model that has a UV light in the holding chamber to help kill germs before the water is boiled then it has a filter pad in the boiling chamber that picks up whatever minerals are in our water. The tank is a bit hard to clean, but so were all the others we tried.

It definitely helps with all of our breathing during winter months.
