hyp saline making me gag

Since I've had this flu/infection thing the hyp saline makes me violently gag. Sometimes I just gag-dry heave. Sometimes, if I have a little stomach upset going on I just puke my guts out. But every time I do it I gag. I can't tell why this is. Maybe b/c I have had a sore throat, and the harshness of the saline really burns my throat, though I don't know why I'd gag from this. I try to inhale past the burn of it and eventually I can't breathe in another breath of it and I gag-so hard.
I keep ice water near by to take sips frequently to clear my throat.
Has anyone else experienced this and have you found anything to help you? I lowered the strength a little, by mixing in 5 (cc or ml or whatever it is) of the 10% instead of 6 of 10%. I hate to dilute it b/c I want it to be effective.

Maybe back off of it for a day then go on to 3% and see if you can handle that. Work your way up instead of down. FYI my doctor only has his patients on 3%....he's letting everyone doing the 7% be guinea pigs as he feels it is too harsh and that the aussie studies weren't thorough enough. I wonder if he'll be able to tell any reprocussions short term. My guess is if it's too harsh it will do cellular damage which will lead to cancer (esophagal, etc.) but that won't be for a few years we'll see those type of results. Hopefully we don't but in the meantime I'm all for not getting cancer. Not only because it sucks but because a cfer has to be cancer free for 5 years to be transplant eligble. 5 years is a long time to wait if you are in need of a transplant.

I recommend the same thing. Back off to a lower concentration and work your way up. LouLou, your concerns that the short-term repercussions may have carcinogenic effects is ,in my opinion, completely unfounded.

A lower % hypertonic saline is better than none, or puking your guts out. I told my doc I had a lot of trouble with the 7%, so he had me try 6%. That didn't work very well either, so I just use 3% now. He says it's much better than using nothing, so he condones my use of the lower %.

If you want to start at 3% and work your way up, I don't see why that wouldn't work. But whether you're using a lower % for a day, a week, or a year, like I said, it's better than nothing.

After discussing my view with hubby the organic chemist he made me aware that stomach acid was not the same as salt substances in terms of acidity and ph. I had thought they were the same pretty much and since stomach acid on the throat can cause cancer I thought maybe hypertonic saline could do the same if it was too strong.

So I wonder what sort of reactions my doctor speculates he'll be seeing from the guinea pigs doing 7% then? He never mentioned the carcinogenic link.I speculated that one.

Thanks for debunking that one Lauren. BTW, great job with your speech/performance.

My ENT said that high saline concentrations can mess with the cillia in the nose (damage it, I think, but I don't know if it was permanent or temporary) and was surprised about the % in the inhaled HS. Maybe that is it?

OH Christian...you poor thing. When I was sick and still tried to use HS I had the gagging. It never really got into my lungs to get the benefit. I would gag & get the dry heaves like when I walk outside & the cold takes my breath away. I had to stop it for that time period. I never did go back to it because Dr. Walker was afraid that the cons outweighed the pros for me.
