Hyperinflation on chest xray

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience.

My daughter is on day 8 of what I believe is a virus. 4 days of fever, followed by a productive cough (on day 4/5). It is really productive when we get her running/doing treatments. Anyway, she complained about a soreness near her left lower lung, so the cf doc ordered an xray. Clear of pneumonia, but it showed some mild hyperinflation. Since she doesn't have any signs of asthma, he thinks it is probably viral and will probably go away. Has anyone had any experience with this? I just hate the fact that there has been a change. Sigh

Thanks!

Hyperinflation is essentially air trapped in the small airways/alveoli become obstructed. CF is an obstructive condition and you do not necessarily have to have asthma to get hyperinflation. Long term if left alone it can/will cause damage and increase your daughters brassfields score. The best way to think of that's happening is that it's like a one way valve like a tire valve stem, air can go in but can't come out. Overtime it can put stress on things and cause damage. I'm not sure how old your daughter is but sounds like she maybe young. Get rid of the infection the hyperinflation will go away, hyper-tonic saline and vest with pulmozyme are your best friends. Is the doctor going to give her anything or just let it go away? Generally infections just don't go away unless you daughter has mild CF.. and can get away with just stepping up treatments.

Thanks Incomudrox for the great explanation. She is almost a big 5 yrs old and does have a "mild" -er CF. However, she is actually on day 21 of a 21 day antibiotic course for a sinus infection, sooooo that part is taken care of. We are doing 3-4 treatments per day. Having her run about a mile per day (broken up a bit) and HTS and pulm, so hopefully that will kick it. It does sound like it si getting better already. Fingers crossed

Thanks!

DS had that issue when he was a baby -- he'd gotten bronchitis at 3 months and it continued off and on that first year due to colds, etc. We instructed to bump up treatments to 4 times a day, do some mini cpt treatments as well while holding him.

Thanks Liza.

Although you didn't directly say it, it sounds like it went away? Was there any permanent damage as a result?

Don't believe there's any damage -- he's had several lung and CT scans through out the years which have indicated his lungs are clear and fairly normal.

And it did go away as the doctors don't mention airtrapping anymore. In fact he had a regular peds appointment yesterday with the local CF doctor who indicated his lungs were clear.

I'm assuming you do the vest, sometimes we still do CPT on DS to focus on possible problem areas.
