hypertonic saline

Hello everyone,
I have a question as to what hypertonic saline is. It is on my Physical Therapy report that I am currently on this med, however, I have no idea what it is. I'm sure I don't take it (I think I would know this) and the PT girl, is a complete MORON!
It also says I take Fortaz, I have no idea what that is either.
I've read about the hyper. saline on this forum before but since I have psuedomonous I don't think it would do much for me.
If you could just let me know what the hyper. saline is and what it is supposed to do, I'd appreciate it. (also let me know if there are generic names for it).

hypertontic saline is usualy a 7% sterile salt solution that is inhaled to hydrate the mucus that would allow you to cough up stuff easier. As a side effect it also induces coughing. It doesn't matter whether you have psuedamonous or not. think one of the best meds they've come up with.

Chris is right - nothing to do with PA. It simply draws water out of the cells to hydrate airways. Often times this water floats on top of cilia but below mucus, thereby allowing cilia to start beating again and move mucus out of the airways.

I agree, hypertonic saline is awesome. In my opinion, it works BETTER than pulmo and the vest, combined. I never coughed up junk with pulmo and the vest, but I sure get a ton out with the h/s !

If you aren't on it, I would consider it, no matter what bugs you have or don't have. It can irritate the throat sometimes, but I can deal with it, since it's meant less hospitalizations for me. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

ya, fortaze is an I.V. A/b. maybe that's the one you get when you have a tune-up?? Or, maybe your moron p.t. is mistaking it for zithromax, and oral a/b??? Good thing you are checking into this, bring it to your doctor's attention!
