Has anyone tried Mucinex in addition to what they are already using? I was watching a commercial for it the other day and wondered if it might be beneficial to add to our other mucus clearing medications like Pulmozyme or overkill ?

Before we got our "official CF diagnosis" and didn't know why our daughter was getting lung infections, our PCP wrote a script for prescription Guaifenesin, which is now available over the counter and is the same drug they use in Mucinex. So, I'd have to say, yes you can give it a try -- it's really just an expectorant. We have used it from time to time, in addition to all the other things, it has helped some.

I added it to my regimen once and it bothered me. It made me cough at night-just an annoying harsh cough. So I stopped it. If I had a severe cold in my chest I might try it though. But not as a regular part of my regimen.

I find it's helpful when you're dry and trying to bring stuff up. But if you are already having a productive cough, sometimes it can make you cough too much and prevent sleeping.

I take Musicnex every day just to help thin things out in my lungs, and if i am feeling extra thick i will take two. You can get a generic brand of it from costco for way cheaper then buying the one bottle of 20 Muscinex for the same price you could get 200 generic.

If you like taking it and feel that it helps I would say go for it, I feel that it helps a whole bunch.

Happy Holidays
