Okay, To start everything off... I am pregnant, and I went to the doctor, for my pregnancy.... I told the doctor of all of my family history including me and my family having osteogenesis imperfecta which is brittle bones... there is no known cases of CF in my family medical history... but the nurse calls and tells my mom that my results for CF came back positive.. I dont remember taking any special tests... can they determine if you have it through blood? I just dont understand and I am so confused and scared and I dont know what to think or to do....

i believe the test is called genotyping or something and yes its a blood test, as far as no known cases, it could be 1000 years, if the 2 genes are there its possible, hope all goes well, good luck...

It is possible to test posistive for CF through a blood test. They will test the CFTR gene for mutations and in your case they found mutations in both parts of the CFTR gene.

Since you are pregnant, they probably did a test to see if you are a carrier of the CF gene. This is a routine screening blood test offered to most pregnant women now. Maybe she just meant that you are a carrier of one CF gene, which does not mean you have CF (you must have two to actually have CF). If this is the case then your partner should be tested to see if he is a carrier also. If he is, then you may choose to have more testing done to see if the fetus has inherited both of the genes. If he is not a carrier then you should not have to worry about it anymore.

you can even have 2 cf gens and don't have cf ...it is double carrier. I am....no cf though.
call your doctor to know exact what it means...

I am pretty positive that they tested me, how would they be able to to determine if my unborn child has it by taking blood from me? But something I dont understand is I had the same series of tests back in 2001 and nothing showed up then... I just moved and started seeing anonther doctor for my pregnancy and had the same series of tests run again... what should I think if it doesnt show up on these tests? The nurse that I talked to said that it could have come up positive due to the bone disease that I have (Osteogenesis Imperfecta).. but I really dont see how... especially since OI is in the bones and CF is in the lungs, right?

Correct. CF affects the lungs & your digestive system.
Do you have symptoms of what your Dr's have thought was asthma or allergies, where colds hit you real hard & you have mucus, even when you don't have a cold?
Are your finger/fingernails round on the ends?
Do you have frequent, loose stools? (sorry to be gross here<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">)
These are signs that a lot of us CFers have. There have been some people w/ no complications until later in life, then they are diagnosed w/ CF. It's hard to say. Ask for a copy of the test results.
I'm just guessing that they may be able to detect CF in the baby through blood draws. I'm thinking amniotic fluid is usually what they test, but what do I know?

I dont think I have it... I have none of the symptoms unless you want to count me coughing from smoking, or sneezing from a sinus infection that I am recovering from... I dont normally have the mucus problems, unless I am sick, which is maybe 2 times a year...

They can diagnosis the baby with cf only by amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (placental biopsy). You should really check with your doctor and see if they mean that you are a carrier of a CF gene?

okay a placental biopsy, or however it is spelled, is when they go in you and take amniotic fluid, right? I will most definatly call the doctor and find out if they meant that I am a carrier rather than I have it... I am so lost over this whole ordeal... cause it just pretty much shocked the living hell out of me with them telling me that that my test results come back positive for cf... which is all they said... I was kinda out of it, for at that point I had never heard of cf before, and I didnt ask any questions... but dont they do the same tests for pregnancy at all doctor's offices?

No, they don't. It's only been in the last couple of years that drs have really started even asking if patients want the genetic testing. Some still don't, you have to request it. Either way, you have to sign a request form.
