I have a sister with CF. She wasnt dx until she was 18. Her health has been failing in the last few years. She lives in PA and I in OH. Her husband brought her kids to me today, because she was having a hard time breathing and went into the hospital. She just called and told me that she is septic. I dont know what that means. Can anyone tell me.

It's hard to say what she meant when she told you that because us regular folks use that term lots of different ways. Some use it to saythat an infection has really "taken off" and some use it to say the infection is in the blood stream and is a whole body infection (like sepsis).
Here's what wikipedia dictionary says about sepsis <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sepsis#Definition_of_sepsis
">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S...#Definition_of_sepsis
</a>
You'll have to talk to her her, her husband, or her docs to see exactly what she meant tho.

Mx,

This answer can get pretty technical but since I am sure you don't want a book I will keep it simple. Sepsis is a a bacteria infection that has gotten worse and has progressed to the next level. People that have sepsis intially have increased white blood cells, temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate. There is also something called septic shock where the body starts to shut down, patients have altered levels of consciousness, blood pressures drop, etc. Long story short it can be bad. Sepsis caught early is just treated by antibiotics so hopefully they will get her on the right ones and she will get better fast

hope this helps.

Thank you, I spoke with her again and it is an infection in her blood. She just recently got a feeding tube and a port. She says maybe from one of them. She also just said she may of had a stroke. She is a nurse and only tells us what she wants us to know. She is asking that I not tell our mom. Do you think this is serious enough to go against her wishes and inform my mom?
