As I have stated before, Courtney has never had lung issues up until a month ago when she was hospitalized.

Courtney does not cough all the time. I would say she coughs an average of twice a day and it is not a deep, barking cough.

The thing I have noticed though is as of late she will be doing normal daily things and she will have to spit out a mouthful of mucus. She does not cough then need to spit it out, it just kind of comes up.

example.........................

We were sitting at Arby's eating lunch. All of the sudden she took the paper cup that holds french fries and dumped all of the fries on a napkin and had to spit out a mouthful of mucus into the cup. It happened so quickly she did not have time to go to the bathroom and spit it out.

Is this normal?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I never experienced this in my life so I would tell her doctor. It could be that her airways are so opened that the mucus just comes up easily which is a good thing. I would also check to see if what she brings up is all mucus or is she having reflux and the food is mixed with mucus?

She sounds so cute

I have the same problem. Usually its after doing something like housework. I'll be making the bed (queen size) and just all of the sudden have to spit up. That's why I always keep tissues next to the bed. Anyway, yeah, its normal.

Completly normal. I have it happen to me sometimes too. Sometimes its like I'll clear my throat, and a mouthful of gunk will come up. Mucus is funny sometimes, as I hardly ever cough at all when I'm not sick, but yet will produce mucus from time to time.

Yep, normal. Mucus is effected everywhere in our body. So it might not have even come from her lungs. It might have been from her sinuses. Sometimes I can just clear my throat and I'll bring up mucus.

Really not an appreciated comment SD, though I suppose that's the point.

Like LouLou said it doesn't necessarily have to come from the lungs. A lot of times I too have gotten things from my sinuses. Or even just lightly coughing throughout the day have something in the back of my throat and clear it and all of a sudden, mucus.
I'd be more concerned if she wasn't producing anything at all.

I've found those little Kleenex packs (travel size) to be quite helpful. Just toss one in your purse and if you get something up you don't have to run to the bathroom to spit it out! Also I'd keep a little antibacterial gel along with that.. never hurts.

Sometimes the best stuff comes up with no coughing at all. Just all of a sudden it's on its way up, and you clear your throat, and your mouth is full. Your instinct is right... it IS as tasty as it sounds. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> But it's normal, no worries.

I am glad that it is nothing to worry about. I will make sure that she carries tissues with her from now on so we don't have to use french fry containers anymore.......lol.

That happens to ME sometimes and I'm not the one with cf. I'll swallow and end up with a mouth full of brown gunk. Wonder what that means? Anway, I'm glad for Courtney that everyone feels its normal! BTW Arby's is my absolute favorite fast food. Gotta love those moz sticks!

I don't have CF and years ago I got pneumonia and for about a month or two later, I'd be minding my own business, and a blob of gunk would just come up. Wouldn't cough or anything. Figured my lungs were finally shedding all the stuff. Was really embarrassing at the work xmas party when it happened the first time -- I had to leave the room with a mouth full of goo and find a place to deposit it. bleah!

Is courtney on a new medication or treatment -- Hypertonic Saline, that could be helping her get rid of some stuff she was never able to cough up?

I have never had mucous to just come up like that, infact I dont cough mucous up at all, only once in a blue moon, and its not much either.
