I have another question!

Ok so I know there's been a lot of threads on this lately. I do wash and then boil and then air dry on paper towels. My question is that my son uses a mask for his nebs or with the spacer for the inhaler. I know they can not be boiled. It says not to on the packages. I did it once anyway, thought maybe just for a few seconds, but it melted and warped. So how should I disinfect them? Or is washing in hot soapy water enough for the masks? Any ideas? Amy? I know you know a lot about this kind of stuff.

In regards to the space inhaler (if you're talking about the Aerochamber Max), you can wash that by removing the backpiece and mouthpiece adapter, and soak the 3 parts for 15 minutes in warm soapy water (make sure you use a mild detergent). Agitate gently (shake, or stir around in the water). Rinse the parts in clean sterile water, shake excess water, and let air dry on paper towel. Simply reassemble.

Here's a link so that you have pictures as well. Its in PDF form:

As for the mask, I would imagine you'd wash the same as the space inhaler - warm soapy water for 15 minutes and rinse with clean sterile water (water that's been boiling for about 10 minutes. Then let airdry.

As crazy as this may sound....

Medela makes reusable sterilzation bags for breast pump parts. Nebulizer parts are made of the same type plastics. You might consider looking into the bags. They are 99% effective for killing bacteria, etc. One bag (they come in a box of 5) is resuable 20 times. It takes me about 2 minutes to steralize my pump equipment, but have often thought if we have to use a nebulizer regularly for Abby, I'd use the bags for sterilizing those pieces as well.

if you can't boil the face mask, i would soak in bleech and then rinse with sterile water.

that definitely needs to be disinfected after each use.

I read in the CFF pamphlet on how to clean and disinfect nebs that the bleach should be 1 part bleach to 50 parts water. I came up with about 1 1/2 tablespoons of bleach for a quart of water (there are 32 oz in a quart, and 2 tbsp in an oz, so 64 tbsp in a quart. So 1/50th of 64 is 1.3 tbsp.) Does anyone else use bleach? If so how much do you use?

Sorry I know no one wants a math problem!

I saw those bags online when I was searching for something to sterilize nebs on the road. Wonder if you could use the microwave sterilizer for those parts. Otherwise, if your water is hot enough -- you could put them in the top basket of your dishwaher.

also see two other methods for disinfecting in the cff brochure.
hydrogen peroxide and alcohol
bleach is very toxic for inhalation where these other two are not, for this reason, I use hydrogen peroxide to sterilize my nebs and acapella choice.

I use the medela bags for Dannys nebs. You put about 2 oz of water in the bag, add your neb parts and put in the microwave for about 5 minutes. They come out mostly dry and steamy. I then put them on a paper towel and let dry overnight.
