I might need IV's

Hi everyone,

For the past few weeks I've been feeling a flare up coming on. I kept holding off and holding off, thinking my cycle of Tobramycin would do the trick. It's been 3 weeks and I'm still coughing more frequently and harder, so I finally called the doctor. We're going to try Colistin. I haven't been on Colisitin in many years because it has never really worked for me. I'm hoping it works this time! I'm allergic to just about all the oral antibiotics (because all the good ones are from the same family), so they don't have anything else to offer me except IV's.

So I'm really nervous about the IV's because of the baby. I know a lot of you have been on IV's already during your pregnancy. Can you tell me what meds you were on and if you knew the pregnancy risk of them? I'm just wondering if there are any Category B IV meds out there.

This was my worst fear of needing IV's during pregnancy. I have never been on IV's before, but I knew they were inevitably around the corner because I have now run out of all my oral/inhaled options to use at home. My only other option is to try one of the meds I'm allergic to again and see if I can tough it out through the rashes, nausea, and whatever else might happen. A rash seems very minor at this point with a Category B than have a Category C going in my bloodstream. You know?

Spouse is going to sign up for FMLA today at work just in case I have to go inpatient. Hopefully we won't have to use up too much of our vacation time at work because we have to save it for maternity leave! We were definitely not planning this little bump in the road. But now at least we're realizing the unpredictableness of CF and that we need to plan a little better than we have.

So anyhow, any feedback on IV meds during pregnancy would be great. I just don't want to hurt the baby.

Thanks!

There are definitely safe ivs u can do. Talk to your doc about it-tell her/him your concerns, and be FIRM about them. Of course your health can not be at risk, and a healthy mom equals a healthy baby. Remember that even though some drugs can pose a risk, having an infection can also pose a risk to the baby.
However, many docs just don't know enough about which iv meds to do bc pregnancy in cf is a relatively new field for everyone. Thankfully my doctor had treated many preg cfers and had experience, and she also was in NYC where 2nd opinions are easily found. When your doc reccomends what to do, I'd call my OB and discuss it with them and I'd also get a 2nd opinion. There is also the option of treating this infection orally if its not too bad yet.

What do you culture?

What meds are your bugs sensitive too?

A rash might be worse than a slightly harsh antibiotic. An allergic reaction can be hard on your body which in turn could be hard on the baby I would think, right?

I culture pseudo and staph; although, I don't know how many different strains or anything.

Not sure about what they're sensitive too either. They're probably still sensitive to the oral antibiotics that I'm allergic to since I've only taken those once or twice.

The rash was like a localized thing, one patch on my face or some other area of my body (not all over). But it was extremely itchy and ended up scabbing because it was so bad.

I'm getting my Colisitin in my mail today for my eFlow. It took forever for me to get the stuff - 4 days! The nurse didn't get my message (it never recorded on her VM) on Tuesday so that delayed things a lot. Hopefully it works!
