Ibuprofen Use for Kids w/ CF

I was on a link some gave for a different topic, but on the sidebar this caught my eye, "Benefits of Ibuprofen in Cystic Fibrosis Children." Its a study documented in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (American Thoracic Society), that suggests " children with cystic fibrosis (CF) may benefit from taken daily doses of ibuprofen in regard to their lung function. The study showed that children with Cystic Fibrosis who took ibuprofen daily had a 29 percent reduction in loss of lung function."

"Michael W. Konstan, M.D., Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, and a professor of pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, led the new study which showed the benefits of taking high doses of the antinflammatory drug ibuprofen in children with cystic fibrosis."

Has anyone else heard this? What are your opinions about this?

I've heard of it. And I took ibuprofen pretty much daily for about 5 or 6 years. I got off it last November. It's hard on the liver and can have other serious consequences and I just don't like drug side effects. People with CF are prone to being extremely acid. Excess acidity is a cause of inflammation. So instead of treating the inflammation with drugs, I have been working on my PH balance to avoid getting inflammation in the first place. It has helped me get off about 5 prescription anti-inflammatory drugs. Yes, absolutely, keeping inflammation under control reduces incidence of infection. But I have figured out how to do that without drugs and I feel a lot better than I did when I was on 8 or 9 prescription drugs.

Paula's (pnhuffman) son, Austin was/is on it. I am not sure who else.

If I didnt have a history of hemoptysis I would be on it. The few times I take it for pain because tylenol doesnt work.....I feel a difference in the pain AND my breathing.

Yes my son Austin is on the ibrofen therapy. It seems to work well with him. He had to go in and stay at the hospital for about 5-6 hours for the testing. They gave him a certain amount of ibprofen and then did blood draws at 2 hours and two other times. I can't remember the hours though sorry!

He started oout taking 1200 mg daily and after he had his yearly check up and another blood draw they upped it to 1600 mg daily.

But when we went to clinic the doctor mentioned he may just be on too much now. Hw said they had sent some things to two different labs and got different readings. But he said he will keep him on the 1600mg for now and will recheck him in a few months. But if I notice any easy bleeding or bruising and he wants to see him right away. He does go off of the ibprofen when he is in the hospital for tune-ups though.
