I just went through this a few months ago for my kids. My son I had put in pre-k so I did a 504 for him and my 9yr old daughter who is in 3rd grade. A few weeks before our meeting I gave the school nurse a book on CF and it helped out alot. I also gave the teachers a cf book. I also worked with the special ed department even though my children have no learning problems. They set up for a high school student who was a senior and is going into elementary ed to come and take my son for his meds before and after snack. I also talked with the teachers about my sons g-tube and stayed with him on the first day to make sure everything went smooth. I explained to the class about his g- tube and said just to make sure they kept their hand to themeselves. My son also said a few words.
I also made sure that the 504 had drs numbers and to allow an extra salty snack during hot months like pretzels that I would provide. I also had my cf nurse fax them a paper stating do not child go out when it is over 95 or under 35. I let the staff know that they both have mrsa and do use gloves which they are suppose to do anyway. I asked if my children are late due to treatments to please excuse them. They are allowed a drink in hot weather or if they need to also. Also unlimited bathroom. We are now thinking of homeschooling our children but I have not yet decided. Any questions my email address is www.burkhalter_95@sbcglobal.net

What kind of needs does your son have? The reason I ask is, I wonder if it is necessary ot have him on an IEP/504 at first. Would it be possible to just speak with the teacher and the school staff about his needs and see how they do? I ask for a few reasons...one, as a teacher, I am not all hip for labeling kids, even medically if it isn't necessary...which is why I asked about his needs - obvioulsy if he has a feeding tube or other things like that, there is obvious necessity, but my mom always just took my teachers a CF guide and that was that. Only through kindergarten and first grade did my teacerhs have my meds - after that I took them myself to school (often packed onto my lunch box) - but I also didn't need treatments of any sort. Just a question, as I know from a kid's perspective, as they get older they don't always appreciate the "special" treatment (I of course understand your son (my son is Caleb too!) is young and you just want to make sure he is treated properly, so I am more speaking from a Cfer point-of-view than a mom one.

This is another thread that talked about starting school and 504 plans.

Shouldn't be too much of an issue in K, but, I will put in something about making sure missed instruction is made up if Emily needs to be hospitalized. I'm a teacher, so I'll probably just request an outline of content to be covered in the early years. Later on though, I'll push for the school/teacher to provide video taped lessons, alternate courses of study, etc. And, with regard to the last post, it is not too early to do the 504. A good 504 should b "invisible" to the student anyway. And, if you don't have one now, its harder to get one next year. The last thing you want to be doing is scrambling to get one in place when you need one.
