My nephew has CF in august he had his 18th B day. Can anyone tell me what us what can we expect to happen now? He seems to spend an increasing amount of time in the hospital. Recently he neede his lungs vaccumed to remove all the buid-up in them. I was thinking it might be a good idea for him to take something like Zyrtec or allegra D since they have an decongestent in them? I have very bad sinuses and besides helping with that I don't get as congested any more. I'm just so glad that he found a new Dr. that he both likes and respects. I'm really afraid for him because I really love him. If any one can tell he much more time he has left or anything else I would really appreciate it.

We asked about using decongestants when DS has gotten stuffed up and we were told absolutely not! Has something to do with the cell lining of the nasal passages and could cause more harm than good.

If you are asking about taking Zyrtec for the lung congestion, this isnt recommended. Even tho the coughing sounds & often feels horrible, its very important. Its not a matter of "drying" up the congestion. The importance is getting it out because bacteria "feeds" on the sputum. Basically the more sputum the more active the bacteria. The sputum doesnt move through our bodies like people without CF so in order to protect our lungs we have to remove it. Does your nephew do treatments with nebulized meds and physical therapy to make it easier to cough the sputum up? This is a very important part of a CFers life. Especially if he has been having a lot of problems!
