Infant Coughs

Hi, all,
My son Samuel is doing well; however, he has always coughed in the early hours of the morning. I did a google search for "early morning coughs" and a lot of sites about asthma popped up. I would assume run of the mill asthma is different than CF related asthma. Sam was at the CF clinic last week, and they said his lungs sounded clear, but as I read posts on this site, I understand that lungs can sound clear, but be harboring infections. I have mentioned the early morning coughing to the clinic staff, and no one is too alarmed. As his mother, I feel like trouble is brewing. Does anyone else have a child how "barks", has a dry cough in the morning? Is this anything to be concerned about? Is there something I should be doing for him besides albuterol puffs, percussions, and hypertonic saline? I know Nightwriter says that the asthma component is often dismissed in CF and it can lead to alot of the infections. Would you recommend getting the bronchioscope within the first year? I asked my CF doc about it and he said it required a half day in the hospital, and a lot of kids ended up sick just because of proximity.
Thank you,

I wouldn't rule out asthma, but asthma is rare to show up this young.

In my opinion (and I have no medical degree) you might want to make sure that he doesn't have reflux issues going on that are untreated. Laying down triggers acid reflux and coughing once you've been laying down for a few hours is often a sign of reflux.

Our CF center puts all CFers on prevacid because it not only helps treat the reflux that most CFers deal with, but also works to help enzymes be more effective. But a small dose of prevacid may not be enough to manage a severe reflux. My daughter was on reglan and prevacid for awhile to manage hers. Now she just takes prevacid.

I agree with the previous post about reflux. My daughter is 7 mos and is on Prevacid and Zantac now. She has had a small cough since just after birth, it has gotten better though...she does the albuteral neb and Pulmozyme & 3%. Have they done a culture?

I'm sorry, I'm still learning all the terminology. They have swabbed his mouth, but they haven't done anything more invasive than that, so I don't think they've done a culture.
Thanks,
