INFANT PT

Hello - I was just wondering how soon after birth chest PT starts (probably depends on the person). Also, can anyone tell me what your experience has been with this? How many sessions each day? How long? My son is almost 4 weeks old. I think the clinic is going to start us on chest pt in a few more weeks. I am a bit anxious about it. Thanks... Paula

We started chest PT on our son shortly after he was diagnosed. I believe we began doing it when he was 2 weeks old. My advice to you is to do it consistently. I have found out that by doing so, it becomes just a normal part of the child's day. My son is now 2 1/2 and sits very good for his PT. Good luck!

Hello,
We also began chest PT as soon as diagnosis was confirmed.
He was 2 weeks old at the time and we did 20 minutes in the morning and another 20 in the afternoon.
Upper lobes and lower.
He is 16 months now and like Jodi's son sits well for PT and sometimes will go to sleep for me!

My son started PT after he was diagnosed at age one. It lasted 25 minutes and he got used to it pretty quick. As your child gets a little older, you can make it more enjoyable for him/her by putting on a favorite TV show or letting them play with a favorite toy. My uses the vest for PT now. If he has a cough, we usually give him 3 sessions a day of PT. If not, 2 is the standard. It WILL get better! I remember my arms being so sore at first, but soon I became used to it and it sort of became a time of day that we looked forward to.

We started at diagnosis, when she was 8 weeks old. We did 12 minutes once per day and now do 12 minutes twice per day (she is now 4 yrs old). We only do clapping. There comes a time when it becomes difficult because of their age but just try to keep him busy. We always used videos, cartoons, or childrens music to keep the mind occupied.

I started having chest pt at birth, i was diagnosed at 2 days old. My mother had a home physical therapist come and help her learn how to do it properly. I believe it was set up thru the hospital. When I got a little older and more distracted, we would watch tv and sometimes she would even have me do chest therapy on my doll while she did it on me, sounds funny, but hey-it worked!!

our daughter was diagnosed at 9 weeks of age. When we first met with her doctor, I said to him, "thank goodness we do not have to do the pounding that they use to do". His reply, "well, we still do the pounding and you will start just as soon as we show you what to do". I then asked, "why, she doesn't have symptoms yet".....his response, "exactly, we want to start treating before the symptoms start"! Although it was hard at first, she soon got used to it (thanks to baby einstein videos <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">. She is now four and using the vest and loves it (most of the time).

Just an update. I met with our CF team and they do not want to start chest pt on our son just yet. Apparently they now think starting chest pt in the very young may contribute or make reflux worse. Since my son is already having issues with reflux they want to hold off a bit. Thanks for your posts!
