Infants and PFT's

The CF Clinic called me last night and they scheduled Emma to do a PFT at her next monthly appointment. I was told they do this to get a baseline to compare to her future testing.

Emma is 4 months old. Does anyone have any experience having had a PFT done on an infant?

My daughter, Kayla, had infant PFTs done (9 years ago). It was really pretty simple. They had given her something to make her sleepy (can't remember what...too long ago) and once she fell asleep, she had this little wrap put around her. It would quickly inflate, pushing on her chest forcing the air out of her lungs. Then quickly deflate. And then repeat for several rounds.

My younger daughter, Hannah, never had infant PFTs done. By the time she was born, we had a different CF specialist, and he didn't see the usefullness of the infant PFTs.

Hope that helps<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi Marla. My son Aidan had two or three of them when he was little. He got Chlorohydrate as a sedative and he was put into this little box. We got to stay with him the entire time. The only problem he had was that it took ALOT of medicine to sedate him- he went down with a fight! Eventually he got too big for the box. Good luck, it's not bad!

Are PFTs the same as a pulmonary function report? I think they are, but I'm not sure. If they are, Ellie gets one at every visit. All it is for her is a little mask hooked up to a computer. To her, it seems like just another breathing treatment. They keep it on her face for a minute or so and measure the breaths. Then out comes these litte circles and they measure the circles to see if thye are normal, mild, fair, or severe. The only downfall to this is if she is upset or active and alert the readings can be inaccurate. She does much better when she's asleep.
