This is for all of you out there who used to use Pancrecarb through the gtube with night time feeds or when your children won't take their enzymes like my daughter.
I fought and fought with the FDA trying to let us get an extension or a Investigational Drug status with the Pancrecarb, but they wouldn't allow it. This somewhat concerns me as to the safety of the Pancrecarb or if it is just all politics, but either way, I have found an enzyme that can be administered through a gtube.
It is a little harder, but way worth it. If you have any specific questions, feel free to call me 479-301-3051.
It is basically the same as administering the Pancreacarb but with a few exceptions:
Supplies Needed:
ZenPep 5,000- these beads are smaller than the 10's and 20's.
30mL or 60mL slip tip syringe( You will have to take a fork tine and widen the tip of the syringe because the beads are large.)
Applesauce (Not baby applesauce, it is too thin.) I buy a big jar of regular applesauce with no added sweeteners.
Minimum size of Mickey Button is 14 French.
10mL slip tip to flush water with.
Clean Rag
Procedure:
Mix each pill with about 5mL of applesauce. I just kind of overshoot this because the more they are mixed up the better.
Spoon mixture into a slip tip syringe with your finger covering the tip.
Keep your finger on the tip and insert the syringe's plunger.
Tap on the counter to bring air to the top and express the remaining air.
Have your child lay down, place a rag around mickey button and administer into a 14 French or higher mickey button.
Flush with water to assure beads are out of the stem.
***I will say it is harder to do than the Pancrecarb. It takes quite a bit of wrist strength to get them in, but well worth it considering my child will not take them by mouth.
***Also, if the mickey seems to be clogged and water won't flush, take a 10mL slip tip syringe, place into mickey and pump it until water will go through. I have had to do this and I freaked out a little but it eventually unclogged.
***AND ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP MICKEY BUTTON IN CASE THE CURRENT ONE GETS CLOGGED.
