Information on flushing your own port?

We learned how to flush my own port last month, we will attempt it ourselves this weekend.

Can any one provide written instructions (re-post here), or an internet link - something as a guide for us to follow to be sure we aren't forgetting anything.

Thanks!

Richard has been flushing his own port for years. He just sterilizes it with some betadine swabs looks in the mirror and inserts the needle pulls back to get make sure he gets some blood flow. And then flushes with 5cc of 100 unit heparin. He does this once a month if he isn't admitted or doing Chemo. Pulls the needle out cleans up with some alcohol and he's done. Takes all of 5 minutes.

Seems like you skipped over a whole mess of stuff like washing hands, putting on sterile gloves to do one thing, taking them off, putting on a new pair, preparing the syringes prior etc, scrubbing port with cloro-whatever in a circle starting from the center, doing that again.... etc, etc. If he's not doing all this, he's not being cautious/sterile enough and is at risk of infection.

Oh, and we are taught to flush with Saline first (to flush out old heparin), then flush with heparin last, which will sit in the line.

Ya know I was just simply trying to help. Yes Richard uses all above said stuff it comes in the access kit. Sorry I didn't include every tooth and nail about accessing yourself some things are just common sense. Next time I will be sure to clarify. He takes very good care of himself thank you.
