Anyone need to start insulin when doing continuous tube feeds. My son is having some blood sugar issues and we were told it could be from doing 16 hr a day tube feeds. Seeing an endo soon and wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar ad has any advice. Thanks, Janelle

Yeah you should see your cf doc and do a glucose tolerance test. Feeding Formulas are very high glycemic ( meaning will spike your blood sugars). It is not a big deal to start using insulin, it will help you convert some of that calories into weight. 16 hour tube feeds does not give your body a chance to deal with the added sugar. Does your doc want you to do that or are you just trying to gain weight. You can try a bolus of the feeds during the day and chase with insulin. I use a combination of short and long acting and even a medium acting ( Novalin) for night feeds. Most Cf's have trouble with insulin, I wish I did not ignore and hope I needed insulin before I did. I wish I learned about blood sugar and how the metabolism works. HIgh carbs stress out the body and the proper dosing of insulin is just another tool we have to fight CF. good luck

My son has severe allergies and unfortunately he is only able to have the formula he is on. He is allergic to gluten, wheat, milk, dairy, soy, and rice. I believe most formulas are high in sugar, but I am not sure. I am new o the tube feedings myself and still have questions. Seeing endocrinologist tomorrow.
