Insurance Changes

Hello, all,
We live in Tennessee and both my husband and I work for the state. We had awesome insurance, but a few legislators and leaders made the decision to switch to insurance which is no where near as comprehensive. I would like to try to fight this. My child has a bright future and we must conserve our resources for his life and that of our daughters. These new policies seem particularly to target people with chronic illnesses. The copays and deductibles will place a strain on my middle class family. Is this a trend across the country because of the poor economy?

I would like to write a letter to my governor and the small list of people who participated in making the decision. I also might write letters to the editors for some Tennessee newspapers. Is there anything else I could do? Is there anyone else living in Tennessee who would like to raise a big stink? We don't work for the government to get rich, we work for them to have good benefits, and our children should not be punished because of their health.

Thank you,
rosesixtyfive, mother of Sam, ddf508

I suspect the switch was made due to the ever increasing rate increases over the past few years. We work for local government and I believe our insurance company tried to increase rates by 20% last year and "only" managed to raise them by 13% instead. The year before there was a similar increase. So our office is talking about looking at other options and one of our board members is talking about decreasing benefits -- having those with family policies pay a larger percentage of premiums.

What's even more annoying high priced vacations, severance packages, bonuses our BCBS workers have received. Last year they sent 20-30 employees and their spouses to the Grand Cayman Islands all expenses paid, board meetings in Hawaii -- we're in the midwest. Crazy!
