Insurance Question

My husband and I are shopping for insurance. We are currently under a group plan with my husband's employer. My husband is changing jobs and we need to make sure our son is covered. I'm interested in which companies everyone has insurance with and if it will be difficult to get coverage for my son. We live in FL and there is a program for children that do not have access to health insurance -FL Kidcare - but we were told by our CF Center that the program is not good. Any information that anyone can give us to steer us in a direction would be helpful! Thank you in advance!

I think you'll have a hard time finding a private plan for your son. I think your best bet would be to use cobra in the lapse between eligibility for your husbands jobs. We have a plan with my job and our state has a program that picks up the co-pays and anything the insurance doesn't. So if I ever have to leave my job, we'll use that in the meantime until my husband or I can re-pick up a group plan.

COBRA right now is a better option than it would have been in the past if your husband is changing jobs due to being laid off, since most of the cost is being covered right now by the new stimulus plan. (Otherwise, COBRA can be insanely expensive!) I have a friend whose son has congenital heart defects & other health issues and has Kidcare insurance, due to his self-employed dad being unable to get coverage for him. It can be complicated to deal with but she's had access to excellent doctors and the state's best children's hospitals through it for him. There are several plans to choose from.

I doubt you'd find ANY doctor who would recommend any state program over private insurance, though, since the state does not pay them very well vs. private insurance. That is why I'd take her 'it's not very good' with a grain of salt and not write it off without looking into it, unless you are only talking about a period of a month or two before your son will be on a new plan.
