Isolation

Hi I am malachy and I need to ask some fellow CFers if they are isolated when they have to go into the hospital. Every time I am admitted to the hospital now-since May of 2009- I'm put on droplet precaustions and am not allowed to leave my hospital room. This is very irritating because i need to exercise to get rid of all the mucus in my lungs; I also like to go to the cafeteria or walk around the hospital and socialize with the nurses. The reason I'm isolated now is because a new infectious disease doctor was hired and she says that because of my multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa I cannot come into contact with any sick person. I understand that immuno-compromised patients cannot get this or they could die but I always wear a mask. In the seven years i've gone to this hospital I have not been isolated so why now? (oh and yes I have had the same multidrug resistance for the past three years). i just want to know if everyone has to do this or is my infectious disease doctor overreacting? I get admitted a lot so i would like to be able to not have to stay in my hospital room for two weeks everytime; i get nauseous!

My hospital always puts both my girls on isolation no matter what they are growing, they say it if for there protection from germ in the hospital, as for exercise we still go to the pt room but have to put on a mask and wash hands before we leave the room, still cant go to the cafeteria or gift shop, and if i go in the room without dressing in isolation i then may not go anywere else on the unit like the kitchen or playroom or bathroom , I refuse to put on isolation stuff to sit in the room all day and night the only time I will is if they are in ICU only because I have not choice.

I've been told that my daughter will always be isolated in the hospital because she had MRSA in 2005????

But she's allowed to leave the room for excerise with the physical therapist???

i also have mdr-pa and i've always been on isolation for every single admission even before i had this bug with the exception of my very first admission when i was 5 in 1990. i'm pretty sure i picked up at least 1 of my PA strains in the hospital so it's for the best interest of other cfers and other immunosuppressed patients and well as in *your* interest to stay in your room as much as it does suck.

i was allowed to leave my room if i gowned, masked and gloved. so maybe do that even though it's not fun <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

See if you PT/RT can take you outside or set up a time with an exercise machine in your room or in a common room when no one else is there. bring an exercise DVD or a game system to do in your room.
