IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR

Well, as I said it is that time of year......FLU SEASON.

I had to go pick up Lauren from school today. She has a 102 fever, upset stomach, and a deep cough.

I know this subject has been posted a thousand times before, but I would appreciate any advice on how to keep Courtney from catching this. She will end up in the hospital if she gets this.

It was much easier when the girls dad live here because we could just ship off Lauren to her dad's house till she got well.

Lauren and Courtney share a room, clothes, just about everything.

Of course I will do the normal extra hand washig, no sharing of food and drinks, Lysol the heck out of the house, but does anyone else have any other ideas?

Thanks!

Is it possible for Courtney to sleep on the couch or in the living room until Lauren starts to feel better. I know it won't remove them from the same home, but I would think them sleeping in the same room and being cooped up with each others germs when one is sick would make the situation worse.

Maybe try giving Courtney some extra Vitamin C or something to help keep her defenses up. I know when anyone is sick in our house I try my best to stay away from them. No direct contact. I do not sit near them at the table or near them in the living room. I don't hug them or touch them period until they are feeling better.

Sorry I can't offer more advice -- I am sure others with multiple kids will reply with tips though.

Hope Lauren starts feeling better soon and that Courtney stays well.

Why do you say she'll end up in the hospital if she gets this?
I thought she has very little lung involvement?

Suggestions are for Courtney not to touch her eyes nose or mouth unless she's just washed or sanitized her hands. Remove all shared towels replace with a roll of paper towels for the week. If you have two bathrooms ban Lauren from one of them and have Court only use it. Also, Courtney should be eating 10-20% more than she usually does in suspicion that her immune system is working over time requiring additional calories.

Otherwise, sit back and enjoy life...colds are part of it and remember what ever doesn't kill 'ya makes you stronger. Thank God for siblings. I think if they did a study it would show the CFers with siblings live longer because of these 'little' colds that come home every now and then.

Lindsey,

We have a sofa bed that Courtney can sleep on, and I will make sure to give her some vitamin C. Thanks for the great ideas!

Lauren,

Courtney's CF docs are from out of town. He only comes in once a month. Courtney peds doc at the local military hospital is the one we see for colds and flus. If Courtney has a fever and anything going on with her digestive tract (since this is the area Courtney has most of here problems) the doc seems admit her.

The paper towel idea is a great one! I also had NO idea about her eating 10-20% more than usually. I had never thought about that!

By no means are we a germaphobe family. I do agree with you that Courtney's immune system is probably better than a child with no siblings, BUT when one of the kids comes home with a digestive issue that is when we need to be very careful with Courtney. We finally have her up to 80 pounds and I don't want her to lose the weight due to an illness.

Thanks for all the great ideas!!!
