I had some issues with creatinine levels last time I was on IV antibiotics. Whenever I'd receive a dose of meds, they'd accompany it with a half a liter of fluid through the IV. It seemed to work for me.

Using the half a liter seemed to flush enough of the drug out of my system that my kidneys were doing fine. I was on Tobramycin and meropenem at the time. I'm typically on IVs every six months for two weeks at a time and just turned 22.

Hopefully your docs can get this under control quickly.

I had renal failure due to IV Tobramycin. I was in hospital on IV abx, had diarrhea, was vomiting (due to the meds) & was not on IV fluids .. Lesson I learned, stay hydrated while on IV's & also all the time for meds. & it is best to keep sputum moving .. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> joni

My creatine levels always get messed up on Tobramycin. They always hook me up to IV fluids... I am on IV fluids almost 24/7 with IV meds. They also sometimes have to stop the Tobra for up to 24 hours to flush out my kidneys because my levels get too high. Very frustrating!!

I greatly dislike Tobramycin but my bugs respond to it.

My personal experience:

After being on Amikacin I.V long term I had some renal damage. (at least 2 years) I had a double lung transplant in March 2007. The anti-rejection medication I was taking for my lungs worsened my kidneys even more causing renal failure which resulted in a kidney transplant. I was too young to understand creatine levels at the time (14years old) so I can't provide that information. I remember hearing the word though.

ok thanks for your replies, I feel I need to get back on IV colistin ASAP. and hopefully the extra Iv fluids will help....
so after a few weeks or months of stopping Iv abx, does the creatine and gfr levels return to their normal level? so far mine leverls do revert back to normal....
Thank you Liz

Hi Liz, I had acute renal failure last year (creatinine 460) and I was given IV fluids which helped. The IV fluids make it easier for your kidneys to work (hence a decrease in creatinine & increase in GFR).

My acute renal failure was not due to IV antibiotics- I reacted to pantoprazole (allergic to proton pump inhibitors). They gave me fluids to make it easier for my kidneys to work so my creatinine got back to 70 within 3 weeks.

I've had issues with my creatine levels while on iv antibiotics also...the solution for me has been a liter of water through iv. Now, everytime I have to have iv antibiotics (usually for 3 weeks) I always have a liter of water each day also.
