IV antibiotics

Hi,

My husband is 28 and has CF. For the last 5 years he's been going on home IV every 3-4 months. Along the way becoming senstive to some and others just not working at all.

Today was his last day of this 2 week cycle of treatment and became sensitive to yet another one.

So far he's tried:

Cipro, doesn't work
Tobi, doesn't work
Pipracillin, senstive
Ceftazitine, sensitive
Meropenum-senstive
Tymentine (sp?), still working

I know there are a few others he has been on, but they either don't work or he is sensitive to.

To date his routin has been two different types of antibiotics for 2 weeks, 7 treatments per day.

Is there any other antibiotic that you know of or have been on that have worked for you? Just to give me something to suggest to the Dr.

We were told today that we'll have to try some of the antibiotics that he hasn't been on for a few years to see if he's still senstive to it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

You really should ask his doctor to run a sensitivity test on the organisms your husband cultures. It will determine what antibiotics are effective for the bugs he grows. What antibiotics work for one person may not work for another due to antibiotic resistances.

I fully understand that.

I was just trying to see if there is another antibiotic that perhapes we aren't aware of that I could bring up to the Dr.

Thanks

There's also inhaled Colymycin, or Collistan I think is the other name for it. Apparently you cannot build up a resistance to this inhaled drug.

Depending on the reaction they may be able to give a counter med. My daughter is on Timentin right now and is really allergic to it so I give an IV does of Benadryl 1/2 hour prior to starting the Timentin. Additionally the Timentin is given over an hour so it does not shock the system so much. Good luck, I know this is can be very frustating.

What bacteria is he culturing? Looks like Pseudo based on the list you have provided. How about Azteonam or Avelox?
