I've got that killing feeling

So I've got an ivy plant that I'm slowly yet unintentionally killing.

Maybe plants aren't just meant to be with me. Anyway it was doing fine for the first month that I had it, then some of the leaves started dying and roots were growing out of the bottom of the pot. So I replanted it, it's in a clay pot now and it's still dying. I was encouraged because it seemed that some little leaves were growing but now they're dying as well.

I've read that ivy's do well in infrequent sunlight so it's sitting on the coffee table so it gets mostly filtered sunlight. I think I might have over watered it after replanting, so I let the soil dry out a bit by not watering it for a few days, now I'm at a point where I'm watering every couple of days when the soil is dry..

Any ideas what to do?

Maybe the soil is to compacted, do you have peralite (sp?) beads in it? It also may need rocks/pebbles in bottom of pot for good drainage. Don't overwater, every few days fr when feels dry should be ok. Good luck.

We have ivy all over inside & outside our house. Different types. But there is one type (dont know the name) that has a smaller, pointier leaf that will not grow anywhere for us. Inside, outside, sun, no sun, water regular, ignore. It just doesnt like something and we have figured out what it is. I feel your frustration. It must be something in the water or the soil that we are using. More likely water since the soil varies......

I stink with plants but I have a co-worker who does great with plants. She said not to water plants with water from the tap because the chemicals can kill a plant. When it rains she puts a huge pot outside and collects the rain water. After it is full she puts the water in empty containers (like a gallon jug) and stores it until it rains again when she gets a fresh batch. I dont think you can over water with rain water since it is what a plant would naturally use outside. Maybe that tip will help.

Ha, I just killed my ivy plant not too long ago. And my spider plant is on the way out. I just thought this might help:

yellow leaves- not enough light
brown leaves- not enough water
spots on leaves- disease
small stubby leaves- rootbound

And try not to over water. It's probably better to be a little on the dry side than too wet, because you don't want root rot.

Good luck! I don't buy anyhting not labeled "hardy" anymore!

That's what always killed most of my plants- root rot<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">. Now they die of underwatering *sigh*.

Hey thanks all..
As for watering I haven't been paying attention to what I've been giving it. We have tap and filtered here so it's probably been 50/50 both ways, and it does have peralite in it, and the soil seems loose (well not compacted anyway).

It doesn't look like it has any bugs on it, and the leaves are multicolored (yellow and green) ..well when I'm not killing it anyway, so I'm not sure if it's not getting enough sun or water.. So I think I'm going to stick it in a sunnier spot, make sure I give it filtered water and hope that it doesn't kick the bucket (or pot as the case may be) on me.
