We have a daughter w/CF and are considering IVF/PGD. What are the chances our daughter would misunderstand our desire to have a CF free baby? We love our little girl so much but feel like if CF is really preventable it would be more responsible to prevent. (That's just our personal decision. We don't feel that is there is one right answer for everyone so please don't judge us.)

We've also heard rumor that the PGD doesn't always work? Is that right? Are there stats about ending up with twins in the situation that you're fertile just preventing disease?

Would another mother/father whose been in our situation share their feelings after it's all been done? How are the kids? Do they understand? Was there any guilt or remorse on your part?

We just have so many questions.

As an adult with CF, I would be happy that my parents tried to prevent passing on CF to another child.

Thanks Jeana! I am happy to hear you say that. Our firstborn was diagnosed with CF at birth which was a total shock to us. Long story but we had been told that we were not carriers....Lab error. We knew we wanted more kids but would never take the chance of passing this on if it could be prevented. So we opted for IVF/PGD and it worked!

Chysi...We used Genesis Genetics for the PGD portion. There is never a 100% guarantee with it, errors can and do happen in the lab but the success rate is over 95%. When deciding to do IVF/PGD,we did think about how Aidan would feel. But we also did this for him. We wanted to restore some normalcy to his life and having a healthy brother has helped heal the heartache of CF. Aidan's health was first and having another child with CF would increase the germs/bacteria spreading around. It was not an option for us to jeopardize Aidan's health.

Having said that, if we got pregnant by accident, of course the child would be a complete blessing. But prevention was key to us. I have spoken to ALOT of older cfers and not one of them has told me that they would resent their parents for trying to have a healthy kid through this technology. I think IVF/PGD was a lifesaver for our family adn I would love to give you more info...

Thank you both for letting me know your feelings. I hadn't considered how having a healthy child could really help us and Clare feel like we're back to normal.
