IV's & alcohol

It would affect your treatment if what you are being given is eliminated by a process that engages the liver. The liver can only process so much.

I don't drink alcohol when I'm on a special course of antibiotics, simply because when that happens, it's because I'm sick and drinking alcohol while your body is fighting an infection just isn't good.

Sometimes things are worth it... I am a big quality over quantity... I would weigh in how long you are on ivs (I do months of IVs most of the time, so I drink with them, socially at times which is 0-4 drinks a week for me).... I don't see the issue in having 1-3 drinks depending on how long you are out... I wouldn't get wasted, but a couple would be fine, at least that is what I would do.

?m on Ciproxin right now (oral) and i had a glass of wine last night. Generally speaking I try to refrain from it when im on intibiotics. I think my liver is already having a hard time.

I have studied a few years of physiology as part of a biomedical science degree, and we learnt that being above 0.08% (prob 2-4 drinks) suppressors your cough reflex, so it means you accumulate sputum in your lungs that you would normally cough out. We also learnt that being above 0.05 slows your immune response, making it harder for you to fight an infection. So with CF a big night out can lead to an increase in infection in your lungs, an increase in sputum that you cough out the next day, and in extreme cases even things like pneumonia.

I still drink socially despite knowing this lovely piece of science (really does take the fun out of it!) but I try to minimise drinking now, and dont drink at all during IVs.
