This is my third day of home iv's. I usually go for two weeks. How long do you guys do them. I know some go for a third week.

Part II of the question. How long does it take you to start feeling better?

Depending on HOW sick I am will vary the length of time it takes me to feel better.

If I am extremely sick it usually takes a few days. If I am so-so I can normally tell a difference within 24 hours. I am currently finishing up a 16 day regimine of IVs (I end tomorrow morning). I felt a whole heck of a lot better after my first dose of meds - but the last time I was admitted several months ago I was sooo sick I really didn't feel better when I was taken off IVs after 2 weeks - I was begging for another week of meds as I had JUST started to feel better a few days before the end of the 2 week treatment.

On average 24-36 hours and I can tell a difference - usually within 3 doses if every 12 hrs or 8 depending on the frequency of the meds. Same goes with oral antibiotics - if they are going to do the job I can tell a difference within 24 hrs. If I don't tell a difference with oral meds within the first day I usually don't feel better at all throughout the treatment.

16 days is the longest I have had to be on IVs thus far. My docs normally only keep me on 14 days. This new doc seems to have the attitude that 2 weeks is the goal - but if I feel like I would benefit from a few days more then just say so and they will discuss it and make the final decision.

What were you treated for? Just pa or something else. I'm taking Tobra and Meropenem 2x a day w/ Tobra and 3x a day w/ Meropenem.

Which drugs were you on?

Usually I am on IV's anywhere from 2-4 weeks.  Lately, the
average has been 4 weeks.  I can usually tell if the meds are
working within the first 24-48 hours, cuz I feel cruddy.
Don't usually start feeling better until 7-10 days, often
longer.  <br>

Hang in there, John,  this too will pass!!!

I culture staph and Psuedo. I am normally prescribed Tobra and Fortaz for the Psuedo - but this round of IVs they skipped the IV tobra and just put me on inhaled TOBI - as there was very little Psuedo on my cultures.

I am being treated with Cefepime and Zyvox for the staph - Cefepime IV every 12 hours and Zyvox oral two times a day. I was on the zyvox IV when I was at the hospital - but when I came home they switched it to oral.
