Jerry, I wanted to know if folks from Canada can apply for financial assistance from the Boomer Esiason foundation? If so can you can mention this to us on this site I am sure many would appreciate this.

I have a fund for my living expenses from the National Transplant Assistance Fund that helps me out with my transplant expenses and much more. I had to raise the funds and they keep four percent but they help to reinburse my medical needs, food expenses, vitamins and much more. Currently they only can help you if you are going for a transplant or have a Catastrophic illness or injury.

It is too bad that a CF organization does not have this available to patients who might be relatively healthy but would have a much better quality of life if they could afford to help pay for some of their other needs in life. All they would have to do is help raise the money from family and friends and possibly sell things to raise the money. There are many ways around this.

Could you mention this to Boomer for me and ask if this is possible to start? Perhaps he could do this for the usa and canada since we are so close? Tell him my Father is Herman Gans. Boomer is a great guy and tell him I know Gary Klausner very well. He is my buddy from NY.

The best for you on your upcoming Transplant. I can see you now running not jogging

Thank you
Risa

Risa, obviously I'm not Jerry, but wanted to share with you & others that COTA (Children's Organ Transplant Association) also will manage funds you have raised and they do not charge you a penny. As a matter of fact, they will throw in funds when you get to certain levels in your fundraising. I can't remember exactly the tiers at which they add money, but if someone really wants that information I will find it.
Obviously it's called COTA, but they will do CF adults too. As far as I know CFs are the only non-children they will take.
Please keep in mind that I haven't spoken to anyone at COTA for a couple of years & am not actively fundraising, but this was how it worked back then & I assume it's still the same?

Hi Risa

Thanks for your comments - I appreciate it....
Regarding assistance...
- I am also with NTAF and am quite pleased with that organization.
- Canada... The Foundation is working on that area right now and I will keep you posted.
- CF Organizations - I agree!!! It is too bad that many organizations do NOT do more for people with CF and TX pre/post right now - as far as I am concerned, at 50 years old, "it's ALL about the here and now and quality of life with CF" and to be honest... as a volunteer at BEF... I am very pleased at the amount of work that they do for CF in the here and now... BEF gives out transplant grants (YTD - 16), academic scholarships (YTD - 52), and we are currently working on another scholarship called "EXERCISE FOR LIFE" for people with CF.
- Regarding your thoughts - I would love to do a podcast with you to get YOUR thought out there - let me know

Again thanks for your feedback

Jerry
