I think some people with lower FEV's can work low impact jobs like cubicle sitting and such. For more active physical jobs of course, you should have higher lung function.

Ry was a computer techie guy, fixed and built computers, and he worked until he was really low. It all depends on you

My FEV1 last time I had pfts was 82% - this was about 2 years ago. I had to quit work due to stress and weight loss. Guess it all depends on the person and what they can handle. We all know our limits.

I currently work very limited part time (no more than 16 hours a week) at a restaurant as a prep chef. My FEV1s for the past couple years have hovered around the upper 30's, low 40's.

I can tell with 100% certainty that it is more difficult for me to do more physically demanding work than something that is less so (I was a pharmacy tech for about a year, that was a breeze).

Thank god i don't HAVE to really work to make an income right now. I think if I had to work 40 hours a week at any job I'd be dead. But it's something that I love to do and makes me WANT to take the best care of myself so I can continue to do it.

My PFTs are in the mid to low 30s. I work in an office, I'm do administrative work. This is the first job I've had. I can work up to 16-17 hours a week. I ususally work 10-13 hrs. I work 3 days a week (MWF) so I will have two days for doctors appts or just to rest.

i think an office job, where you can sit down most of the day might suit you. i work in retail- at a clothes store- and i used to work about 40 hours a week but recently I've halved that because of my health, pfts are in the 40's. it depends what the people you work with are like as well, and whethet they'll let you work flexible hours to fit everything in.

Cariann,

My FEV1 fluctuates back and forth between high 60's and mid 50's depending on how close to IV's I am. I work more than 40 hours a week but my job is a managment one that is not physcially demanding. A doctor friend of mine always has told me that people that work live longer than those that don't. I agree with that to an extent but not entirely. Something about the responsibilty of a job keeps some people going, I know I am one of those people. I think if you want to work because your bored and feel like you want to give a part time job a try you should. If you just want to work because you don't feel you "contribute" enough at home I suggest you discuss that with your husband. If he is worth a salt I am sure that isn't how he feels and would rather you stay home and take care of yourself.

I work as an Executive Admin, 40 hours a week. My Fev 1s are low due to a infection I had in December. They are climbing back up (normally in the 50's) but I went back to work when they were around 28. I think it is a good thing. I also exercise so that helps.

I have a part time job as a house keeper. 9-10 hours a week. Very physical work , but it keeps me active. My fev1 last time i was at the Dr. was 48%. My boss is a doctor so she is very understanding of cf and has no problems with my needing days off for iv's, or if i am going a bit slower and dont get things done on the days i dont feel energetic. I've been working for her for 16 years now, so she has seen me go thru almost perfect health, to what i am now...... older

gosh how do you people do it???? my fev1 is ok by cf standards but i cant work! even if i am slightly sick my brain just gets muddled up, cant concentrate and i cant funtion properly! my rebound hypos get in the way too. id need breaks every hour to eat. if i dont get them i will end up walking around like im drunk and about to pass out. my arthritis and acheyness is a problem too. id be living on nurofen if i had to work. not to mention caffeine tablets to combat my weird fatigue problem. thats the biggest problem, my fatigue. if someone could fix those problems, especially the fatigue, i could work to my hearts content.

I work in an office, 40 hours or so, with FEV1 in low 20's. I carry O2 with me to work and it is a big challenge at times. I also own a house, do my yard work with my o2 strapped to my back. I get some interesting looks at people driving through my neighborhood when I am riding my lawn tractor or walking behind my snowblower with 02. You got to do what you got to do.

I work at a desk the majority of the time, but do occasionally need to run around for conferences and seminars. I seem to keep up ok - my FEV is 80%. I work about 40-45 hours a week.

Hey Cariann,

If you really don't like office work - don't do it! Stress from an unhappy job will harm your health as much as anything else. Find what you would really like to do, and then find that in an environment you can deal with.

I'm not sure what kind of hands on person you are - if it art related, there are lots of opportunities to work in an environment that is not physically straining.

I think the biggest challenge, is not so much if it is a office job, but if it requires a lot of running around and tight schedules. Let us know what you find

My FEV1 is around 50 and I work over 40 hours a week as an elementary school teacher. Yeah my health has been affected and i don't do my medicine as well as I could but I am making a difference everyday and that is what gets me through it.
If I did something I didn't love then what would be the point of living anyway? Yeah, I might live longer but not happier.
i don't have a choice, I have to work and I don't reccommend teaching health wise because you work unbelievalbe hours but you do what you have to to get by!
