We saw Warwick in July for Aidan- two years old. He first told us about Mucomyst. Our CF doc said no, not necessary.

It has always been on my mind and with all the talk about NAC ect..I asked again. He gave us a script and told us to neb 2ML with the Xopenex. It just came today so I will probably try it this weekend. Aidan's current treatments are:
Xopenex- 2X daily
Pulmozyne-1X daily
Creon 10- 4 with each meal
VitaMax- 2 ML
Flonase and Neil Med rinses daily
Respirtech VEST- one hour daily at 80%

Question- Our CF doc said to put Mucomsyt in with the Xopenex in the AM and keep just Xopenex and Pulmozyne in PM. Is it overkill to use both Pulmozyne and Mucomyst? They are both mucolytics- is it too much? Aidan is very healthy and these are all preventative at the time. Thanks,
Megan

well pulmozyme and mucomyst have totaly different mechanisms of action.

pulmozyme actually digests strands of DNA that are left over after the white blood cells die in the airways.

NAC turns into GSH and prevents a great deal of the inflammation process from actually happening.

on another note, does your kid ever get headaches or nosebleeds?

Flonase has alcohol in it (yes, you are spraying alcohol up your kid's nose) and it tends to cause bad headaches (which makes sense... alcohol up your nose would do that) and epistaxis.

Not to hijack, but what is epistaxis? I couldn't use it for long because it ended up making my nose feel more stuffy after a while...

So do you think it would benefit him by doing both Pulmozyne and Mucomyst?
Amy- do you use Mucomyst?
He actually does get nose bleeds more in one nostril than the other. What would be better to use than Flonase?

I'll refer you to my blog for alternatives to Flonase <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://blogs.cysticfibrosis.com/categories.cfm?catid=1978&flcache=2221531&entercat=y

I don't use Mucomyst. Pulmozyme works well for me. But my doc and I are in constant discussion about mucomyst. For now, I take NAC (that I import from Europe so I know for sure each tablet contains exactly what it says) which has helped boost GSH in cells throughout my body <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

my daughter had a clinic visit yesterday and the doc prescribed flonase. We haven't been successful in getting her to agree to it yet - I think I'll ask to substitute nasacort aq
