Kaitlyn is in the hospital

Hi Everyone... My daughter, Kaitlyn - 12 years old - was admitted to the hospital yesterday. This is her first hospitalization since the week she turned 3.I took her for her checkup yesterday (she had started coughing really hard over the last couple of days) and her FEV1 had dropped from her normal 121% to 77%. My other daughter had also declined, but not to the extent of Kaitlyn so they didn't admit her. Kaitlyn is on IV antibiotics, breathing treatments every 3 hours around the clock and CPT every 6 hours. The plan is to stay for 10 days. Just wondered if anyone has any tips or tricks for us to make this easier. It's been a long time. I am also very sick and spent all night last night in the ER getting myself some meds. I have bronchitis complicated by asthma and a sinus infection but I finally started some antibiotics today so I hope to start feeling better.

One of the problems we are having already is with food. The doctor ordered her 3 snacks a day... we have been here since lunchtime yesterday and she has yet to get a single snack. I have been getting her stuff from the cafe but now I am ready to throw a fit. I have called the nurse and she is busy but is supposed to be coming down in a few minutes.....

Anyway, if anyone has any tips or tricks for us, we'd appreciate it. Anything that will make this go smoother...

Thanks.

One thing I would suggest is go to the nearest walmart or grocery store and get some snacks that you can keep in the room with no problem. It gets expensive in the hospital.
I am sorry to hear that you have to spend Christmas in the hospital but at least it will make her feel so much better.
Take care,

There should be a snack pantry on the floor some place where you can store snacks in the refrigerator. Usually they have jello, pudding, pop tarts, soups that you can give her. Make sure if you bring food in to label it with her name, room number and date. Hospitals and healthcare facitilies have to dispose of anything that is not dated and labeled.

My son's last hospitalization, they provided a selective menu. Also, ask to speak with some from the nutrition department and see if you can select her meals prior. I would pick double the things he liked to make up for the items I knew he wouldn't eat. In my son's case, any calorie is a good calorie. He is very picky. Good luck and our thoughts are with you.

Heh, don't know what hospital you guys are in, but if there is a Ronald Mcdonald house nearby, call them!! They are so awesome about bringing over snacks, munchies, whatever you need!! So sorry about you being in the hospital for Christmas, my little Zoe is on her last day of Zithromax, they say if her cough doesn't go away, they are looking at a hospital visit for iv anitbiotics. She is still coughing...I am praying for a miracle.

I'm so sorry you are all sick for the holiday <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

I also suggest going to the local supermarket for the snacks and labeling them.

Hospitals are hopeless at providing snacks and decent food.

They always give my daughter stale chips and she won't eat most of the dinners. so i end up paying out heapz for cafe food for her.

I hope all goes well <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I'm sorry you're daugher has to go in the hospital. I find hospitals very frustrating places to be. I agree with everyone about bringing in food from home. You could even enlist the help of a close friend or family member to bring in your daughter's favorite high calorie snacks meals. I bet if you ask family or friends you'll be surprised at how people are willing to lend a hand. I also recommend, getting books(for yourself and daughter) activities to keep her mind and hands occupied. You might want to keep a pen and pad of paper in the room for any questions that come up about your daughter's care. That way you don't forget what you wanted to ask. Lysol wipes to wipe down surfaces are helpful.

And again, if anyone is willing to help you, i say take the help. It sounds like you are already run down and hospital stays can be very draining, so take care of yourself. Use lots of Purell, and I hope both you and your daughter feel better soon.

When my daughter was admitted when she had abdominal surgery at 5 months old my husband had bronchitis and some sort of tooth infection, we considered for him to wear a mask so she wouldn't catch what he had. Just a thought.

Oh Renee, I have no tips because thus far we have narrowly escaped the hospital. I just wanted to say I'll have you and your girls in my thoughts, and hope it isn't too awful of a stay.
