Keeping track of who's who

I don't know the real names of many people on here, nor to I care to. I feel very strongly about maintaining my privacy on this site and protecting the right to privacy of others. Obviously, the administrators of this site feel that way too, or they wouldn't ask us to create usernames.

In order to keep a forum topic flowing more smoothly, and being less confusing, I wish more people would make use of the quote box for their topic replies. At the very least, I wish people would stick with referring to people by their usernames.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it VERY confusing when, in the midst of a forum topic, someone posts a response to someone specific, as indicated by addressing that person by their real name? Sometimes I've really put my foot in my mouth because I can't tell if a response it aimed at an original poster, or at someone else who has responded to a topic.

And please, help me maintain my privacy by referring to me only by my user name, except in the case of PMs (which are, by definition already private.)

I will respect your wishes regarding your username. I also understand the request for using the quote option when responding toother people. BUT Quite honestly just as you cant be bothered or have the the desire to learn peoples real names, I dont see the big deal to use them. Just seems like something to bitch about IMHO! **in honor of Emily....shrugs**

It's not that I don't want to be "bothered" by it. I guess what I really meant when I said "nor do I care to" is that if someone isn't using their real name as their username, then until THEY decide otherwise, I don't feel it's my place to pry. It's just that there are some folks that I've never been TOLD their real names nor learned of them in any other way.

I'm not bitching.

My opinion to this is that if someone signs the bottom of their page with their first name, or even their last, then they are offering that as a part of their identity.
Though, in most cases I use the brackets for either thier user names, or their first names, it seemed to me that by using the first name is viewed as a more 'personal and friendly' way to associate with them.
I'm also concerned about the privacy, and hope that just my first name is sufficient enough to maintain my privacy, so I can understand your position.
It would seem that if someone DOESN'T leave a first name, then their user name is all that is left for a way to identify them in a sentence. I don't think everyone shares the same opinion about using their names instead of their user names, but if so, probably deleting their names at the bottom where their signature is would be the first place to start.

Aha! I had forgotten about that little morsel of information! Shortly after creating my own profile/signature/whathaveyou to go with my name, I opted to "not view signatures" because they cluttered up the page. Thanks for the reminder that people's names are in there.

What a "duh!" moment that was for me! Ha!
