kidney toxicity

hey all,

so for about a month, I was on IV tobramycin, vanco, and pip-tazo. My blood tests came back abnormal because of these and my diagnosis was then acute renal failure due to antibiotics. since then, my kidneys have gotten much much better (almost completely back to normal), but my docs said "NO NSAIDS!". this is fine, but I don't think my sinuses will EVER function normally (or painlessly) without the occasional Motrin or Naproxin. has anyone had kidney toxicity from antibiotics and later been normal enough again for everyday kind of anti-inflammatory pain pills?

thanks

There are a few members who have issues. Joni a/k/a Beleache was in kidney failure due to tobra. This was when SHE was still learning & before she switched centers. She now makes sure IF she gets tobra or any abx for that matter to have fluids (IV &/or oral) even if the doctors dont mention it.

Even normal tobra levels doesnt mean it cant be doing a # on your body. I didnt have much continuous fluids when on iv's growing up, but now I ask for them.

Its a lot to flush out of your system & IMHO it just makes sense to be sure!!!

I hope Joni answers you because she really learned first hand about this!

First I wanted to say that my doctor never wanted me on Tobra for longer then 3 weeks, partly because of the toxicity.

I can't have NSAID's anymore because I'm post translant. The anti rejection meds I'm on are very hard on kidneys and it is just a rule that every tx patients gets because you don't want any more strain on your kidneys.
So when I have sinus pain the only thing I take is Paracetamol, up to 3 times 1000 mg a day. When it is very bad I try to take it every 8 hours to keep a stable level in my blood, that helps better.
But still Paracetamol isn't always enough. I have to say I just go with the pain and don't take anything else.

I've had severe back problems 1.5 years back, with that I was immobile for a couple of weeks with a lot of pain. My doc prescribed me Tramadol for that, but that really made me feel bad, like I was drugged up really bad. I was allowed to take Tramadol.

Hey Erin,

Like Melissa said i had renal failure due to tobramycin.. The hosp/drs. did do peaks & troughs (sp) but as a lesson to them , to me and hopefully to others that read this, your levels can change, esp if you are vomiting & having diarrhea..

Now when im in hosp i always ask for IV fluids now... When at home & on orals i always drink 8-10 glasses of water a day..

My drs. stopped the azithromycin (used for inflammation) because i culture M. Abscesses and you cant do mono therapy w/ that bug

Recently i had a cold/cough and my drs PA told me to use Motrin for inflammation, i called my PC dr. he is also renal, and he said i could use it for 3 days, no longer..

I just saw him again for carpel tunnel pain (falling apart here, lol) he said to ice it and use motrin for a few days, no more than that..

It would be a great question for us to ask our drs. What else can be used for inflammation for ppl like us.

I was also given pred. one time because of an asthma exacerbation , but dont think they use pred on a regular basis.. Not positive about that though ..

If you get some answers let me know , i will do the same..

Take care joni
