Klebsiella Ozaenae

We just got the results from Ella's latest sputum culture and it came back showing she was growing something called "Klebsiella Ozaenae". Our nurse told us it is nothing to be concerned about... it is highly treatable by the same anitibiotics that are effective on Staph, so they see no need to change her current treatment and will just try to "get it" whenever she needs another round of antibiotics... which for Ella isn't very often.... perhaps only every six to eight months. Has anyone else ever heard of this bacteria? Or had experience treating it? We did some initial research today and it sounds like a whole lot of bad. Talk of mortality rates and the like.

Please let me know if you have any info at all. I'm kind of in that panic stage where we have no idea what it is we're dealing with, no idea where it came from, and no idea what to do about it..... but sitting on it and doing nothing just doesn't feel right.

Thanks.

Im not sure if it is the same thing but my daughter cultured Klebsiella when she was just months old. She only cultured it one time and never agian. I only new it as that not the Ozaenae part. Dont know if yours is different but I was a mess, terrified just like you and our dr told us the same thing she would be fine, but I just knew he didnt know what he was talking about LOL. She is 23 mths now and no sign of it! She should be just fine!

Hi there,

Just wanted to let you know that when my daugher was 5 months old she cultured Klebsiella, not sure what type that's all they told me. The doc did not seem overly concerned(I was though of course) She at the time was in the hospital from abdominal surgery and this particular bacteria is found in fecal matter(I think) So I thought it had something to do with that. Anyway, she is over 3 1/2 and has never cultured it again and was never treated with antibioitcs for it.

If you are concerned, make the pulmonologist explain the culture report to you.
