what does everyone do for school? Is your school large? how did your child respond to the large environmet?
Our public school is 350 kids and I am so nervoues about her going to such a large school that I chose private but cannot really afford it. BUT she has stayed so healthy with the small school what do you do and what was your experience with a large school and illness? I am such a germ phobe its killing me.

wish our cfers had some kind of funding for smaller schools

DS goes to a public school, and while he's been in daycare center environment since he was a baby, the thought of 250 kindergarteners at the early childhood center made me nervous. What helped was that the same time he started school, H1N1 flu hit that year and the school district cracked down on their sick kids policy, plus made sure class rooms had hand sanitizer stations, surface wipes.... They also reminded parents via the school and classroom newsletters not to send sick kids to school, especially since there are several children with medical issues attending. Even if there hadn't been a flu scare --- kindergarten stressed to the kids that they shouldn't touch each other, touch surfaces...

DS Elementary school is grades 1-5 and I think there are about 200 plus kids who attend there. They stress hand washing, covering coughs.

DS was relatively healthy during his daycare/preschool years. Got a few ear infections & colds, but otherwise was fine. Kindergarten he got sent home once 'cuz he ate too much and hurled. 1st grade he was fine. He missed a couple days in 2nd & 3rd due to stomach bugs.

I guess I'd be a bit more concerned with a private (religious) school if there are parents who choose not to vaccinate their kids. And I guess I'd also check and see what the various schools' private & public sick kid policies are....

we go to a small public school. I was afraid to send her to the closer - very large school - above 1500 pupils - so she (and her special needs due to cf ) would get lost in the amount of students, teachers and other problems. We ended up with an another cf girl two grades up higher - but the staff know which the girls are and that they should not meet - esspecially since the other girl is in bad health already :(
we chose public cause public schools have a better help program - state fund - for kids with cf. Private schools can say what they want.
We are very pleased with her school so far.
Parents of kids in her class took the information to heart and so far Asia has brought only one small cold from school. Asia is know in grade 0 but we will try again to get her into the same school.
what was most important for me was how the staff and principle reacted on our first talk - before we signed her up. Their reaction was - well - I didn't expect such a good farsighted reaction in how to make school safe and normal for Asia.
