Laryngitis

Do any of you get Laryngitis??

I got it last summer and looks like I am getting it again. Same time of the year. I am not taking nebs or inhalers. No sore throat yet.... just coughing and loosing my voice. Not coughing up antything.... pretty dry and irritating. The last time this happened I felt like there was a lump in my throat the entire time. I ended up coughing up a mucus plug.

Last year the doctor told me just to give my voice and throat a rest-- no antibiotics. Viral laryngitis. I have no fever and no aches-- a bit more tired at the end of the day. I am staying home tomorrow from church to protect my immune system... don't want to get something else on top of this.

Are we more prone to laryngitis??

From my experience, we are not more prone to laryngitis. I'm a professional singer, and provided I don't overexert or misuse my voice, it keeps well. I just started my first dose of steroids ever, however, and those are having a significant effect on my voice.

Keep in mind also that any kind of coughing can eventually result in losing your voice: The vocal cords are extremely connected to your respiratory system, and coughing damages them. Unfortunately, coughing is pretty much the best way to clear your airways, so there isn't much you can do about it.

Oh no! You were just talking about this in your blog!

I have gotten Laryngitis many, many times. Sometimes just from coughing, sometimes I don't know what triggered it.

I was a speech major in college and they had told me when you have Lar. not to whisper, that that is harder on the vocal folds than just trying to talk. Most of the time when I get Lar. anymore I only can whisper, tho.

I believe Mel has had lots of experience with this, too, hasn't she?

I seem to be extremely prone to losing my voice. My throat seems to be really sensitive and if anything irritates it I lose my voice...if I start a new neb, if I talk/scream too loud, or if I get a virus.
