What is considered to be an appropriate length of time for a course of antibiotics to treat pseudomonas? Also should it always be with inhaled along with an oral med. ? Whenever I culture pseudo. my doc suggests that I take 2 or 3 months of both an inhaled and oral. even if I am not symptomatic.

My son is prescribed a 30 day cycle of cipro along with a 6 month (alternating 28days on/off) cycle of Tobi for PSa and has to get past 3 clear cultures to call it done.

At what point of the treatment does your son take the Cipro- at the beginning or end of the 6 month treatment with the Tobi. My doctor has mentioned that I should take two antibiotics at the same time for the whole course of treatment. I am just wondering what other doctors are recommending.

Pseduo doesn't go away. I'm not sure why docs put people on antibiotics (more so on older patients), when they are not symptomatic. Pseudo will not go away. Cipro is usually done at the beginning of treatment. 2 weeks of Cipro while doing either 2weeks of 1 month of Tobra, and then 2 weeks or 1 month off of Tobra. If docs prescribed meds for PSeudo even if you were symptomatic, then you would be on meds 24/7 and eventually begin to build a resistance to antibiotics. Thats why I don't take a lot of meds - resistance. What will you do 10 years from now, when you're resistant to Cipro and Tobra?

My son's cipro is at the beginning - I gather it is sort of a "nuke-it" tactic to put the bug on the defensive. Also note, his PSa has so far been just intermittent occurences of the non-mucoid strain; treatments might be different for the mucoid version

does anyone take an oral antibiotic along with the inhaled antibiotic for the whole length of treatment time even if it is a course for 2 or 3 months?

No - the longest I've ever done an oral antibiotic is 3 weeks. Along with a month of inhaled. I've never gone longer then a month on inhaled either.

10 to 14 days is typical length of time for something like Cipro. Combining this with another anitbiotic is usually done to help attack the bacteria from different angles sort of speak and also to try to hold off resistence to Cipro. I'm not a doctor but I personally would not take Cipro for longer then 14 days unless absolutely necessary. As was previous said, once you start with Pseudo it is hard to get rid off and eventually it will always be there and you just need to manage it. Taking Cipro for a long time would not help get rid of it completely and you risk it developing resistence to Cipro which you don't want. Some doctors will perscribe Tobi in a month on month off cycle to manage Pseudo. Each person is different and depends how often you are having Pseudo flare ups. You need to work with your doctor to figure out what works best for you to manage Pseudo and avoid anitbiotics like Cipro until you really need them.
