liver function tests

Hi All,

We had an appointment yesterday. Good news the CT scans looked "normal" for both kids. Unfortunately Berne's liver function tests were funky. Here is what the nurse wrote today. "ALT and AST were 133 and 88, respectively." I tried to get a sense from her of how elevated these are... and she was vague. Then I tried to find a "typical range" online and didn't get anywhere.

Can anyone help with more information?

Thanks, Stacy

You can find some slight differences on this, but generally the reference range for AST is 5 - 40 and for ALT it is 7 - 56.

I have done a little research on this because Katy's AST was slightly high; most of what I've read puts more emphasis on scans, ultrasounds, etc. - the physical appearance of the liver. So I think the CT scans being normal is VERY good news.

I hope that your CF team explains the ALT/AST readings to you soon. Also - I know that they needed another reading on Katy's for comparison, which they found in her medical records. I'm not sure of the time period lapse between the two readings.

For Katy, the treatment was to put her on Urosodiol (helps prevent gallstones, essentially).

Thanks Dana. That's exactly what I was looking for.

The CT scans were normal for lungs... so we'll hope the follow-up clears the liver too.
