Living on a farm? And quesetions about soil.

Hello. I found a WWOOF (google that if you're not familiar) that I'd like to volunteer at. But I'm worried about soil exposure and cepacia. My doc said that if I wanted to start a garden, I shouldn't worry about it and just do it. And to not even worry about a mask.

So that's one thing, but a farm is another. It's something I really want to do. Anyone with CF have any advice about farm living?
I grew up playing on a farm and helping my uncle with stuff around the farm and the only thing I had problems with was cleaning wheat and most likely you won't be doing that on WWOOF. I suggest to all to play in the dirt.

Hello,

Growing up and working on my family farm posed no health risks to me.

WWOOF sounds exciting, you will learn so much. These farms that promote awareness of ecological farming practices are global, you may get a chance to travel further afield, and bake organic bread! Very tasty.

I now live on a lifestyle-block where we have hens, I like to wear gloves when cleaning their coop daily. I'm often outside in the garden, I'm pretty fussy when handlng compost/potting mix, again wearing gloves and mask to protect myself against legionnaires' desease, I don't fancy compromising my already bung lungs!

Cepacia maybe a concern if you were working with rotting onions or along side another CF person who had this infection.....

Good luck with your decision, the country air is so much more healthier than the often polluted cities.

Cheers

No onions grown, but other vegetables yes.

So no concerns about just regular soil contact? I am very excited about this opportunity, but the "C" word is very very bad, for anyone with CF I can imagine.

Thanks for your encouragement!

Hello again,
Sorry, I haven't replied to your last post before now.

You have probably read many articles on Cepacia, there's been dozens of questions answered in detail on this forum. You could possibly type in Cepacia in the search box and spend a day reading all the info!

Sadly, and deservedly the cepacia syndrome appears to receive much negative press, as it can be a very 'bad bug' to culture. I was diagnosed with this 'nasty' 12 yrs ago and at the time I was not given a great prognosis, more recently I have acquired a second strain and hey! I'm still here to tell the story. I lost a younger brother and older sister to Cf, they did not have cepacia.......
As a precaution, I do wear gloves when gardening, in my case, I think it makes good sense to do so.

In your first post on this topic, I feel your Doc gave you good advice, we wouldn't achieve much in life if we were controlled by fear. I have led a full life, often governed by my own instinct. There will always be hurdles along the pathways of life, with or without CF.

Cheers
Eileen.

I know that Burkholderia cepacia has been used in organic farming. I don't know if it is still used but maybe you can contact the WWOOF to find out what kind of biological agents are used for treatment. And even if cepacia has been used in the past, how long ago that was.

I would not be overly concerned with working in "normal" soil, pathogens are everywhere and you can't live in a bubble. My opinion would probably change if the soil had been treated in the past with cepacia.
