Living Will

Not to be morbid here....but I feel like I need to set up a living will. Just for the sake there is so much 'drama' in my family, I want everything in place before I die so the decisions were made by ME. (plus that will probably be easier on my family in the long run).

Does anyone know how to go about this? I looked it up online and it seems to be a little harder than I thought. (DNR, tube feeding, vents).

I thought I could just fill something out by myself but I'm thinking I might want someone's opinion on this (dr or social worker).

Has anyone made out a living will? How often do you need to update them? How do you go about making decisions when you are just spectulating on your death? For example, I don't want to say no to a vent if I'm awaiting new lungs, but I don't want to be on a vent forever.

Thanks everyone,
Kelli

Hi Kelli,
I don't think it's morbid that you want to do this, I think it's good planning. My family has lost 2 in the last 6 months now we are all looking into "future plans". I suggested the 5 Wishes program. I'm not sure if it is honored where you are, but it wouldn't hurt to check it out. I suggested to Trent that he look into it as well so that if the time came and decisions had to be made there wasn't a battle with me vs. his family.

Lots of free info and resources on the web...

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22living+will%22+%2B+example">Living Will Examples etc</a>

Living will may not remove the 'family issues' but at least it will dictate what an individuals decision was when they were able to make it.

Sorta funny story.... My wife and I had our wills updated, since the kids are grown and out of the house. Some of the items was establishing a living will, power of attorney, etc. Well, the week prior to filling out the forms, my wife had been seriously depressed and was talking about suicide. Filling out the forms for the lawyer she checkmarks that she wants to be kept alive? I asked "what the hell for? Last week you were going to kill yourself!"

The lumps healed up well! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Which reminds of another story. My Mom was telling me what she wants when she 'passes on'. (She can't say die?) She wants her body shipped from Florida back to Pennsylvania. I said "You may want that, but I'll probably have you cremated." She says, "If you don't do what I want, I'll come back and haunt you!" I replied, "No more so in death, than you already do in life!"

Doc said there will be no visible scarring...! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Cheeses, man, some people are so sensitive....
