Looking for a cure

I have been hearing about scientists coming close to having a cure for the last 10 years. Does anyone know exactly how close they are and if they will have one in the immediate future?

Who can say how long or how soon it will be until there is a cure for CF. I've heard the same thing from my doctors for the past 10 years - that it will be cured in my lifetime. I hate to say this, but I am very jaded. I don't think that a cure is in the immediate future, nor do I think there will be one in my lifetime. I am happy just to live a LONGER life with CF, because I honestly don't think there will be a cure anytime soon. Maybe a way to somehow control CF, but not a cure.

I don't know if they are trying to keep our spirts up or what, but they can't even find a cure for the cold yet. So them finding a cure for cancer or CF seems a big farfetched. But I keep trying to get my one friend to go into research for CF so she can find a cure.

People are going to boo me... but I've heard that since I was a child and they discovered the CF gene. More than 15 years now. I'm with Liz, I don't expect to see one in my lifetime. And the stuff they're working on most right now is for the babies and little kids who don't have much lung damage. Most of the meds and treatments they're working on pretty much overlook the CFers who are already adults.

I'm not really sure on this, but I think it's because they're working on a lot of preventative stuff. Meds that prevent lung damage before it happens. For most CF adults, we've already got a significant amount of lung damage. Let's say it's a drug to block pseudomonas from getting in... A lot of adult CFers already have pseudomonas, so a block wouldn't help. And we'd continue to decline because pseudomonas does NOT know how to play nicely with others. If it's something about lung tissue being scarred, we've already got a fair amount. So again, preventative measures aren't going to do much for us. Even if they found a way to stop damage in its tracks (but this is generally more difficult than stopping it before it starts), we'd still be stuck with the health we have now. For some, that's pretty good. For others, not so much.

I hope I don't come across as being a pessimist but to tell the truth I just can't see a cure in the forseeable future. I heard "10 years" when my son was diagnosed 28 years ago and am still hearing the same. I definately think that better meds will become available and more of a control will be found, but the ones that are really going to benefit are the young ones now that don't have much lung damage.

The reason for this? $$$$$$$$

Of course, I'd love a cure. BUT......I'm very jaded too. I've been told for years that I'll get one, and I'm tired of it. I still have a little hope that I keep in the back of my head though.
Mostly, rather than thinking about cures in my lifetime, I focus on living as best a life I can. On living to the full, working hard, being a good person, and enjoying life. Regardless of when my time is up, I want to leave a positive leagacy to my loved ones.

So I focus more on day to day life than cures. But, I'm certainly rooting for everyone who is trying to develop the cure.

Nope, staph is staphylococcus aureus.
Pseudomonas is an entirely different bacteria.

You can read about ithem both (in relation to CF) here:
